Was that more to do with the ABC's preferred Saturday afternoon time slot and Anzac Day being mid week Phil?

Ch7 don't seem to have any preference other than get as many Crows or Power Ressies games on the TV as possible

I would imagine it had everything to do with the ABC's preferred time for games. Their one and only window for state Football nationally is Saturday afternoons, and there was no flexibility at all with this.

As for the inevitable dig re Crows and Port, (*yawn*) I struggle to see how Centrals v Norwood, Centrals v South, Glenelg v South or this week Eagles v Glenelg relates to Adelaide or Port Adelaide. Some people on here will grasp at anything for a no AFL in the SANFL whinge, even where an argument does not exist!

Does anyone know if this is a locked contract for a certain number of years? I'm guessing one of the clauses would be that both Adelaide and Port whores are in the comp.

matt35 wrote:With some of the ratings discussion that has been taking place in the Crows Magpies post game thread, thought I would make a couple of comments in here.

I have no doubt that Seven would be extremely happy with the audiences they are getting for their SANFL coverage. Naturally they would have been stepping cautiously in to this, after all, the SANFL has not been on commercial television since 1992, and had been attracting small audiences on the ABC. I would think the ratings so far would be well above their expectations!

My hope is that if this can continue, that down the track this may actually mean some revenue pumped back in to the SANFL and the clubs. A win-win if this does occur!

What rubbish. CH7 are charging for their services. And it was all covered before the 1st piece of film was cut so in reality it would not matter to them if the ratings were 1viewer per game as long as their fee was met.

agree though that if ratings continue to outstrip expectations the SANFL should be in a stronger position next time negotiations start.

Was always going to happen when a professional coverage took over from what at times was completely amateurish coverage by the ABC.
I know people that watch it now that wouldn't have been able to name 6 SANFL teams 2 years ago.
I also know people that gave up on the ABC years ago are back watching SANFL on TV.
Well done and thank you Channel 7!

Watched Crows and Port sunday. I thought it was ok, obviously not to AFL standard, but for SANFL pretty good and we should be lucky that we get a telecast

Three year deal. As stated by jtc, because the SANFL is paying for the privilege of broadcast, Ch 7 would be contracted to keep doing it regardless of whether Echunga and Tumby Bay took the place of Port Adelaide and Adelaide in the SANFL comp, and would be quite happy to do so (provided it gets more than 10 viewers and doesn't damage the channel's image).

In the meantime, the vast majority of Australians continue to be able to watch Satdy arvo local footy (including rugby union in that term) on the ABC—with the cost to each comp falling somewhere between 'nil' and 'pretty modest' (given that say the NSW Rugby Union and the NTFL wouldn't have a fraction of the budget that the SANFL have).

The real question as to whether the numbers add up, is whether the sponsors (whose support allegedly subsidises the massive broadcast cost so the out-of-pocket expense is little more than the SANFL paid to the ABC) are also locked in for 3 years.

Yes, must admit that is a little surprising. Imagine we'll see a bit of Sturt in the second half of the year, not to mention in September.

Why can't the full schedule be released if a select few know it?

Are the ABC (TV) covering this one Phil? I ask because I thought they were still doing VFL games.

Yes, mate they are. Neil Cross is also heading over to give the SA flavour to the coverage...

I have also heard, from a pretty reliable source, that ABC Victoria will send the game through to SA as well so it should be on the box here...

Can't wait for the trip over there and a nice 4 day break in one of my favourite cities in Australia...

Well at least we'll see plenty of goals, and that's what the viewers want ;)
