This was not the rules last year. Top ups had to come from Amatuers and Country Leagues. There was also a rule saying the AFL players had to play first. Hence why Summerton had to play in the SANFL Reserves. Now thats gone he can play before AFL listed players. It says that Crows are also allowed a Marquee player. This would be much better option fpr them than Greenwood/ Keath captaining.

Pretty sure the Crows picked up Jake Levers brother last year from the TAC cup. As JTC, doesn't matter if any rules don't suit the AFL sides, they soon will.

The AFL is taking a group of young players to the USA on a tour as the NAB AFL Academy . A number of SA player there. Do they need permission from their SANFL clubs to go and do SANFL clubs get any compo. It seem the AFL own all rights to these young kids over current clubs.

If the players declines to be part of the Academy that makes it hard for AFL to take them to USA. Probably does sweet nothing for AFL drafting prospects to take that course of action obviously.

Just another junket and excuse for Kevin Sheehan to add to his Frequent Flyer points balance. Honestly, these blokes are worse than politicians. So, football training is not possible in Australia any longer? Total rort in my opinion.

Yep. This money should be going to football in Australia.

"They will be living amongst aspiring tennis and soccer players at the IMG facility" Really? Only there for three days so hardly living. Expect diving, grunting and injury timeouts to be included in our game in the years to come.

IMG's in sunny Florida, and don't forget some time in the sun in Santa Monica, California. As knowledge said, it sounds more like a junket.

If the program doesn't have an international component they lose their AIS eligibility. Same reason it's been to South Africa and Ireland in years past

The program should be scrapped.

Why are we paying for 32 kids to be enhanced for draft selection ahead of others?

How about enhacing "state league " clubs to run Auskick or similar?

So after sending many emails to people including the SAnfl and Crows I have got some responses. Both Port and Crows can have a leadership player over the age of 28 that is straight off the list. Both Port and Crows can recruit up to 4 Interstate players for 2 years. Crows had Murphy and Lever last year. This year will probably go with one and thats James Lonergan from Sydney University FC. So once Summerton retires Port will have the same issue as the crows with their leadership player having to be over 28 and straight off the list

In the last 6 weeks, looking on the Official SANFL Facebook page, there has been one article relating to the SANFL Men's competition, one.

That article was about a new assistant coach.

Even the SANFL have lost interest in their own comp.

I have no issue promoting womens footy, but how about at least a weekly article of each of the teams with interviews etc etc?

Good observation Dutchy. Personally I couldn't care less about the woman's SANFL, so it's very tempting to hit the 'unlike' button for the SANFL page, at least for the next few months.

Roy Laird on the 'gimmick' that is the Fast Footy concept, while also pointing out the lack of marketing for the season proper. Yet again it's difficult to disagree with much of what he has to say-

CENTRAL District coach Roy Laird has labelled the SANFL’s new “Fast Footy” pre-season competition a pointless “gimmick” after his club rejected an invite to participate.

The Bulldogs will be the only team to miss next weekend’s tournament at Norwood Oval – which will feature 12 players on the field for 10-minute quarters – and are instead focusing on their pre-season.

The SANFL is offering $20,000 as prizemoney, including $10,000 to the winner, $5,000 to the runner-up and $2,500 each for third and fourth place.

Seven-time premiership coach Laird did not see the benefit of his side playing in it and said the money spent on the competition would be better spent on promoting the home-and-away season.

“Between players, medical staff, officials, to cut into people’s time – the sport is already demanding enough,” Laird said.

“We just thought with that, the fact that it’s a gimmick product and teams aren’t going to play their best players at this time of year because of injury, what’s the point?

“It’s 12-a-side, from a footy game plan point of view there is little to be gained.
Laird believes the money could be better spent elsewhere by the SANFL.

“Then you run the risk of injury and in a controlled environment in training we think we can control that better, so it (Fast Footy) is of little interest to us.

“My concern is the main season and I don’t think there’s good enough marketing being put towards it in favour of gimmick products.

“The International Rules with the best players in the country could only attract half a stadium so I don’t see this doing anything to attract new supporters and that is what our competition has got to be about at this stage.”

Fast Footy will feature unlimited interchanges, a last-touch out-of-bounds rule and kick-ins after every score, including goals.

Teams will play two games each – on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10 – before winners advance to semi-finals and then a grand final.

Central chief executive Kris Grant said when the SANFL informed him about Fast Footy in December, the club had already committed to a pre-season program, but he would not elaborate on what those plans were.

“This Fast Footy thing was a rather quick decision by the SANFL and we had already committed to some preseason plans, which we had to commit money to,” Grant said.

“There’s mixed views (about Fast Footy) but we would look at it on an annual basis.”

The SANFL has been contacted for comment.
