R4 South v Sturt Saturday 3.05PM

Postby DOC » Wed Apr 21, 2021 12:23 pm

Both sides coming off a win from last week. Sturt were convincing over West and South escaping with a narrow win over Port.

Sturt will miss Patrick Wilson who only got back last week. South will miss Jason Horne who will be playing in Melbourne in an AFL recruiters exhibition match. South will probably have available for selection Overall, Heaslip and Brown back from injury but I can't see all three coming in. Perhaps Heaslip for Horne.

South and Sturt have had some good games over the last few years and I expect this to be no exception.

South by a point.

Always a tough game against Sturt, they play us very well and can shut down ball movement. South need to be switched on from the start to avoid a let down here after a grinding win last week. Go Panthers!

South 11.15 (81) def Sturt 6.6 (42)

Not particularly pretty at times but will take the win. Sturt lead by 15 points half way through the second term, later went to the long break up by a point, but South kicked 9 of the last 10 goals of the match. Only poor conversation in front of goals prevented a 10 goal win.

South named their best as: H. Sampson, B. Gibbs, J. Cross, A. Cailotto, R. Milsom, J. Haines

Kicking skills from both sides left a lot to be desired, particularly in the first half.

Tarca took a contender for the mark of the season, only to go back and miss the goal from the top of the goal square.

Lots of wasteful possessions in this game but South finally straightened up in the last quarter for a comfortable win. Sturt managed just one goal in the second half so that was a positive for our defensive work. Happy to get the win but South will need to start games much better before a Glenelg or Eagles team gets a big start and we won’t be able to chase them down. Norwood at the parade on Friday night will be a tough one, they will be coming out firing after their loss to West. Go Panthers!

That Tarca grab was amazing, disappointing for him that he missed. But that does happen a lot it seems.

Yep. Comes from celebrating a mark forgetting that the task at hand is to kick the goal.

Loved Sampson's game yesterday. The best he has played and great to see his parents and grandparents at the club to witness it.

South awarded the Frank Barry medal yesterday to him as well.

Three grinding wins in a row (hard to remember three in a season) and we get a big test with the next two away before the state game.

Reserves and their performance (lack of) is of deep concern.

Similar game to when Sturt played the Eagles. Sturt play with plenty of spirit, and kept up for three quarters, but not quite the quality to stay. South a very good side. That mark, surely mark of the year! Will take something very special to beat it.

Sturt with Davis, Wundke and Wilson will be very hard to beat.

Looks like South will not have any injuries out off yesterday. If someone gets dropped for Horne they will be stiff.

Nobes was dropped yesterday for Overall. Sam was well held and probably better for the run.
