Three games at Thebarton

Postby Thebbie69 » Wed Nov 30, 2005 8:47 pm

[  What is the general feeling about three games at the mecca of football - Thebarton Oval ? Jack "don't call me Stevie Wonder" Cahill may even be seen at Thebbie once again (He will be the one with the UV Sunglasses on and the white cane). 8)

I can't wait for the Eagles V North game, although a North supporter, I lived across the road from Thebby from '84 to '93, and used to watch a fair bit of footy there when I wasn't at a North game.

My Step Dad was a Torrens man so I spent more time at Thebby Oval from about 1979 through to 1983 at Thebby more than anywhere else.
Loved Thebby, great atmosphere and a great surface in its day. I've always thought Thebby and Prospect were very similar grounds atmosphere wise.
Be interesting to see what its now like with less structures on the South Rd side but I'm looking forward to getting back there.
Most memorable day at Thebby was when I was there the day Robert "Mad Dog" Muir jumped the fence at the Northern Goals and started laying into some spectators, classic stuff!

I was there that day, I also remember him coming off the ground at Prospect for the 1/2 time break, and as he was walking towards the cricket club change rooms, he was spitting on the North supporters.

I enjoyed it immensely playing West at Thebbie this year albeit it was a terrible showing by Westies - they gave up at half time. I think this year against port and north we can look forward to a crowd of at least 6500 considering we got 5000 against a low drawing club like west who were at the bottom of the ladder on a day when it was a not a stand alone game. I'd urge all opposition supporters who haven't seen thebby for awhile to attend the match cause it really will be a fantastic day.

Agreed wedgie - Prospect and Thebarton are 2 of the best grounds to watch footy at.

It's a great oval, only problem is that there needs to be a proper scoreboard, and the outer fence needs a touch up.

Agreed, need a new scoreboard, the old one was taken down, because it was run down. At least I can go to one at Thebby this year.

Remember a few happenings at thebby when I was young.
Bill Barratt kicking an enormous barrell for a goal with a muddy ball from the centre of the ground.
Norm Dare jumping the fence and putting on an obliging spectators coat when westies Bob loveday called for a count.
Orange colored mud.
Spoofy Faletic whacking tiny Gary Bracegirdle and Peter Hines retaliating and connecting with a forearm covered in a plaster cast to his head.
A great suburban oval with a great atmosphere.

Nothing to do with West Torrens people, its footy purists such as myself would love to see as much footy back there as possible.
Easy solution, get rid of Elizabeth and Noarlunga and play all South and Central games there!

An outsider would think that it must divide the club..? What do the original Woodville people think..? My point is the club is called the Eagles and their home is Woodville Oval...

Im certainly not a Woodville person but considering they have 1 home game at Thebarton and 7 home games at Woodville its hardly worth getting excited about surely?
Especially considering they'll probably get at least 1500 more to their Thebby game than they would have at Woodville.

Woodville Oval is barren, lifeless & without soul. Thebarton has a rich history about it, and should be brought back up to league standard- which wouldn't be hard, as Unley, Prospect, Richmond & The Parade have hardly had any major re-workings done since the 80's (not including minor restorations & the bulldozing of Norwoods...), and they still have games on a weekly basis.
Yes, the club is the Eagles, & their home is Woodville Oval... but where'd the Eagles come from? They were born out of a one night stand between Woodville & West Torrens- whose home ground was Thebarton. You're not going to deny them that heritage surely? As much as I have stated that Woodville are not represented well with regards to club jumper & merchandise, the benefits of playing at Thebarton far outweigh any concerns about having a few less games at Oval Ave. The crowd will double, purely because it is at Thebarton.

I agree scrap Woodville Oval I'm sick of their council fining people who love to watch SANFL footy.
If they can't appreciate the local league than the local league should let Woodville Oval become the councils problem and play no footy there at all. Bring on Thebby.
Melrose Park that aint South I'm talking about the real South.
