A friend got me the Richard Pryor Show on DVD boxed set for my recent birthday . It was made in 1977 and at the time was apparently groundbreaking. Today it just looks horribly, HORRIBLY outdated and unfunny :( Now what do I say to her when she asks what I think of it??

Pryor had lots off-set dramas with NBC. Both declared war over the creative direction of the show. Rich walked off the project at one stage.

Pity Pryor wasn't more picky when it came to movie roles. He didn't give a rats so long as they coughed up the Johnny Ca$h. One of the few wise choices he made was Blue Collar where he really got to show his acting chops.

Tossed out writer/director Paul Schrader's dialogue. Pretty much ad-libbed the whole thing. Loved what Schrader had to say: "You can't write dialogue for Richard."

Autobiograhy Pryor Convictions is a funny, full-on read. Long-rumoured biopic is still struggling to get off the ground.

Fingers crossed Will Smith or any of the Wayans brothers have nothing to do with it...

I've seen footage of Richard Pryor live from this period and it is brilliant and he is VERY funny - live. The TV show was drawn out, and sketches that were 2-3 minutes long should have been 30 seconds long at most. Too much "zany" as opposed to actual funny.
Mind you TV shows have a habit of making great comedians look average. Case in point George Carlin.

Pryor's stand-up in the 70s is brilliant.

Easy to see why he's been such a big influence.

Hosted SNL once. Did a great skit with Chevy Chase...

I hadn't seen the Alan Partridge's Knowing Me Knowing You and subsequent series since they were repeated on Foxtel a couple of years back so I treated myself to the boxed set last week. Just finished watching them all and Partridge is still one of the most cringeworthy characters created.

A reminder of how cringeworthy he is.....Alan meets the Irish.
