48 Liam Pickering Kangaroos. turned out to be a very good player, a fair % of the games he played were for Geelong.

Would love to know what happened to Tim McNeil, appeared to have it all ... Very good hands, exceptional pace, dead-eye dick kick for goal, however for memory only played a few years of SANFL then wandered off into obscurity at a pretty young age ...

I asked "big Al" that Constance and he told me that he actually went to the Eagles briefly a couple of years after this. From memory he was also a player that had to have footy boots especially made because his feet were very wide.

Cheers Ord, now that you mention I think I recall him having some foot issues ... Most likely followed Balmey & Bruce to the Eagles??

Shouldn't 39 read D. Kernahan to Carlton from GLENELG?
Is 2009 the year of the Tiger?

I think the list is right TB, wasnt Sticks picked up, along with Bradly and Motley just before the draft came into existance.

David turned out to be a very reliable vfl player for the Blues. Saw him play many games preominately at full back I think. Was much taller than I remembered from Glenelg and for Carlton, a highly regarded player. To most very underated!

apologise if this is a stupid question but did players such as A Jarman, C McDermott & S Salisbury nominate for the draft and then choose not to go once selected? If so, was it because Brisbane and Sydney chose them?

Good question Brent .. I thought for memory that players didn't nominate in the first few drafts, it was just open slather and clubs could select whomever they liked meaning the player was "tied" to them if they wished to play AFL??

As is now, I don't believe players have to nominate- if they are registered & playing within the SANFL, automatic nomination. Back in that era, you had the player retention scheme, which players qualified for if drafted- ie they were entitled to a pension if they stayed in SA. Obviously, this was disbanded with the introduction of the Cows.

There was the old 'form four' system where signing with a VFL club tied you to them for four years.

But surprise, surprise, there was all sorts of shenanigans going on.

Originally, Bradley was going to Essendon, Platten to Carlton, Anderson to Sydney and so on.

MP, you are right. Platts was interview onn the radio here recently and he told how, I think Carlton gave him a new car to sign on. He later went to the Hawks and Carlton came and wanted the car back. Didnt get it though.

Jimmy, you could add the Sidebottom brothers to the mirror breaking group!

Sheedy would have been upset from the outset that Bradley never made it to Essendon because he is supposed to have said to Carlton president at the time John Elliot, before he had even played a game, that Bradley would be one of the greatest players of all time.
