Just another case of one of the four trying to justify his job.
Wasn't umpired in the spirit of the game and is such a poor advertisement for umpires, and no wonder they get shit canned.
It seemed a little premeditated to me.

I'm not talking about the whole games umpiring I'm talking about that particular decision.
At a vital time in a game and to me looked premeditated.

Agreed, that was probably the worst I've ever seen when I saw it on replay later that night.
Was shocked.
If that had happened to Geelong the AFL would be rebuilding their HQ today.

It was against the rules.

The rules say the penalty is a free kick.

The spirit of the game is nowhere in the rule book.

Was a a good advertisement for an umpire to know the rules.

Premeditated? By Collingwood ? No doubt.

Like I said, no wonder umpires get booed when they pay rubbish like that.

I'm sure I saw somewhere Collingwood were warned a couple of times about doing this at stoppages

Yep. In writing. That is the fourth not the first free paid this season for not giving the ball directly to the umpire.

And it's not time wasting they are worried about, it is allowing the player to get back to position illegally by delaying the ball up.

I reckon 1 in 3 tackles are in the back.
When its stacks on the players who jump on to bury the ball under the guy at the bottom with the pill are all over his back driving him into the ground. If they started paying these frees and holding the ball the game would be better.
IMO there should be a 3rd man in rule, penalise the 3rd person to a stacks on, leave it for the 1st 2 to fight over.

Agree if they paid these in the backs it would have to help clean things up.

Another one, which might not be too popular, would be going back to 10m for a mark, so the defenders would have to cover more ground, potentially freeing up more space down the ground. The 15mt is umpired ridiculously inconsistent as it is anyway.

And yet the umpires wait for the ruckmen to show up?
Boundary throw ins are worse.
I think whateley even said that the umps were concerned we were wasting time in all our close wins.

Just umpire the ***king game you **ck heads rather than analyzing how teams are winning.
The tone of Nichols voice and the smug look on his face, he was proud as punch!

Again, no wonder they get abused.

But if the umps have identified that this is a tactic by Collingwood in close games to gain an advantage against the rules, why wouldnt they crack down on it?

How about umpires concern themselves more with HTB, in the back, kicking in danger than worrying about the scoreboard

The poor young lad saw Nick Daicos and immediately gave him the ball.

The kids has spent the entire last 6 months being told that's exactly what he has to do. ;) :D :D

It's not the umpires job to beat Collingwood!!!!!
It's their job to umpire objectively and with no bias.
They are failing on both counts and limelighters like Nichols are ruining the rep of the good guys who just umpire the game.
Get the basic rules right before trying to influence game outcomes.
