I think it's a great move making him captain.

Contracts are always up for debate, but he's local, and now long term. He's a gun.

why would you lock in a bloke for 9 years that is never going to leave the club?
I could understand if it was Butters who is Victorian but Rozee is going no where.

Must admit that part confused me too.
Lock in the interstate guns and keep the locals to shorter term contracts I would have thought especially someone like Rozee who is ultra settled and a loyal bloke. Awesome deal for him though, he'd be stoked!
Great choice having a North Adelaide lad in charge too! :D

When he's a top end talent on top end money who isn't going anywhere it gives the club an opportunity to work the salary cap around him. 4 or 5 year extension was probably adequate but for him and his team to agree ( who knows, maybe they raised it ) to 8 years reflects his commitment.

big risk for club and player, no doubt some clauses in that contract to cover both parties

Makes more sense than the Hinkley contract extension (to take the pressure off him in finals)
FMD, if he was under kept under pressure they probably would have lost both games by....... around 119 points

$1.5 million for the first two years to average out $1.2 million over the term of the contract.

That puts him in the very top bracket.
Is it worth it?
Time will tell

He’s worth that amount, not sure about the length of contract though.

I’d agree other than I’m still wondering about the Brodie Grundy deal

Im not up with these contracts - do they get 100% if they do a knee or something?
Is it different if the injury is in / outside working hours?

It’s all relative.
The Dodgers turn over $800m plus each year

They lock in an elite footballer for the remainder of his career

Yeah, it’s no Polec deal but I guess we’ll live with it.

They don't have to deal with a contract increase and/or a bidding war when he hits Free Agency like they will with Butters.
That and as Booney mentioned being able to manipulate the salary cap a bit easier are 2 benefits.
In an ideal world they'd have Rozee and Butter's contracts swapped but they couldn't have given Rozee the Captaincy and Butters the better deal.

Like others have said, locked in a bloke who genuinely looks like he could be a top 5 footballer in the comp.
Locked him in at a price that 'could' be unders in 5 years' time if he reaches his potential.
Port can now build the squad around him.
Rozee can pretty much guarantee he finishes his career earning approx. 10 million, knowing that so far in advance should mean he can set himself up well in the future.

Obviously, its a lot of 'what if's' and based on potential, but at least Port knows this bloke, they know how he trains, his personality, his work rate etc etc. If ever there was a need for a really long-term contract i think this is one of those situations.

Like others have said I'm sure if they could have Port would have locked Butters into a longer contract as well.

Genuine question: Who was the last person to sign a long term contract that didn’t limp to the finish or get traded?
Has anyone?
