Over the next three years, they added Shaun Hampson, Nathan Gordon, Sam Lloyd, Todd Banfield, Matt Thomas, Anthony Miles, Taylor Hunt, Andrew Moore, Kane Lambert, Jacob Townsend and Chris Yarran.

The problem with mature age recruits is that when they dont come off, they stall the development of the younger players, and just become list cloggers. So you can go backwards very fast.

North Melbourne also took the risk - Waite, Higgins, Dal Santo could have all been busts, but they are all playing great footy.

So I think it can work, but you have to be smart about it, and Richmond werent

It's the amount of mature age players they've taken, simple as that. Take 2 or 3 perhaps, but not 10 or more.

Some could argue that Waite, Higgins etc are doing so well due to being at a good side. Put them in Richmonds side and they wouldn't get a kick

Also, bar Stephenson from Geelong who wasn't there all that long, they've hardly brought blokes in from the top clubs of the times.

They've got a few from Carlton, a couple from Adelaide and a couple from Port, Melbourne and a Kanga a few years back.

Haven't really poached anyone from Hawthorn, Sydney or Geelong over the last 5 years, the clubs with the best structures and systems in place.

Waite, Higgins and Dal Santo were all in the best 22 of their respective clubs too, and were proven contributors (waite and higgins were if they got their bodies right)

But yeah, they certainly brought in too many.

Maric, Houli, Miles, Grigg and Lloyd have all been pretty serviceable and I think if they stopped there and kept their younger talent it could have worked well.

Waite & Higgins have both credited North Melb's medicos and training as a huge influence on them playing regular footy, I was sceptical of this however tie this in with the now 3rd year straight of an excellent run with injuries at North and maybe there is something in it.

Both had a lot more talent than the Richmond recruits, it was just a question of getting them healthy and on the park, particularly Higgins.

Just too many mediocre players there. Yeah a few mature age players work well and can sometimes fill that gap, but it comes at a cost.

Big men can't afford to miss any preseason, he has and you can tell. Also, he's not the size of the best big men in the competition, Goldstein, Mumford, Nic Nat, Jacobs etc.
