Talk on the national game

Europe?

Where did this chat originate from?

A few players had a few days in Hong Kong, a few went home to various parts of Australia.

They left Shanghai on Sunday and had to be at training on the Thursday. Europe.

Firstly, the competition is very even, more so than ever before perhaps. West Coast, Melbourne and Richmond at the top, Carlton and Brisbane at the bottom and the rest, on their day, could beat any of the others. Maybe only Gold Coast excluded from that.

Port's coaching? Growing frustrated. We've beaten Sydney in Sydney and North at Etihad without either side looking like they were going to trouble us. Pretty much controlled both games without too many problems. Both of them without Ryder in the side, the one who creates so much of our clearance work.

Why? In both games we played our football, front half football. We like to get the ball into our F50 then lock it in and with repeat entries score from there. Why we go away from this game style to "suit" the style our opposition plays I don't know. I just don't know why we focus so heavily on the oppositions style compared what works for us.

Against Sydney 52 I50's, 14 goals, against North 51 I50's, 15 goals, against Hawthorn 38 I50's, 9 goals.

The Hawthorn result because we spent so much time fart arsing around in defence, so much time chipping the ball around half back allowing the Hawks to set up their zones behind the ball and allowing Siciliy to take intercept marks galore. He had a field day as he got loose in the back half.

I'm frustrated with our coaching group.

This mirrors what I saw at Noarlunga yesterday, unsurprisingly I guess, they seem to be trying to perfect a possession style game.

Read what I wrote a few pages back about Port v North at Alberton last week. It was clear what they were trying to do, it was clear they couldn't or at least shouldn't have been!

Pittard played well yesterday, should be automatically back this week. Barry was OK, Frampton seems to be going backwards, remember being pretty impressed with him last year. Hayes looks like he will develop into a nice prospect.

I was excited by what Frampton showed through patches of 2017, I could see him really pushed as a viable option this year to add to our forward / ruck rotations. Unfortunately he's stalled and Hayes has, in his first season, already seemingly over taken him.

Hayes looks very promising.

If port misses the finals this year, is Kenny in strife?

Wouldn't have lasted the last time everyone was calling for his axing if this was the case.

I always thought Port would win a few games they shouldn't and lose some they should've won this year, I didn't have high expectations, I bottom half finish and a full on attack for the holy grail next season was in my mind.

I guess he bought some time when he recruited heavily.

You’re in the extreme minority of the Port supporters I’ve heard & know. All the talk was top 4, have a tilt at the flag.
Missing the finals would be major step backwards.

Yep, eerily similar to us. Recruited heavily as we overrated our list and thought we were close and then extended the coaches contract when it wasn’t warranted. Now we can’t sack the coach because it would mean the board would have to admit they are incompetent

And rightly so, they should be better than what they have shown. Question marks around the coaching staff now.

good thing Ken promotes exciting footy and has entertaining press conferences hey Boon. Should be a major factor in his employment? ;)

I'm not hitting the panic button, yet.

Big few weeks ahead though. Richmond, Bulldogs, Melbourne.

6-4 now, I'd expect to be 7-6 after those three weeks and in the race for the bottom half of the 8 like 6 or 8 other sides.
