AFL 2019 season

Talk on the national game

Some food for thought about some of the coaching positions that are and may be up for grabs at the end of the season:
Since, and including, 1996 there have been 23 flags won and 17 of those were won by coaches in their first head coaching job in the AFL and of the 6 that were not - Leigh Matthews won 3 at Brisbane (he led Collingwood to the 1990 flag), Mick Malthouse won 1 at Collingwood (he led West Coast to the 1992 and 1994 flags) and Malcolm Blight won 2 at Adelaide (he didnt lead Geelong to a flag but they had 3 GF appearances in the 6 years he was there)

For the losing Grand Finalists in that time, once again, 17 of the 23 were coaches in their first head coaching job in the AFL and of the 6 that were not - David Parkin won flags in his previous stint at Carlton (lost 1999 GF to the Roos), Mick Malthouse (as above and lost 2002 and 2003 flags to Brisbane and 2011 decider to Geelong), Leigh Matthews (as above and lost 2004 flag to Port), Ross Lyon (lost 2013 GF and while flagless at the Saints, did appear in 2 GF's not including the draw).

What I'm getting at is this does not bode well for Brad Scott, Brett Ratten and Michael Voss in particular as they seem to be the 3 coaches who have coached before that are in contention for future jobs and they did not appear in a Grand Final during their head coaching stints. Recent history suggests that a first timer or a Grand Final appearing coach (at their previous stint) is the way to go. I understand that one day there will be an exception to this but how long will that be.........................

I'd be more interested to know how long each coach had been in their role before making the GF though - it's a misleading statistic IMO.

Worsfold had 2 years off. Did he walk or was he pushed? It's 6 years ago, I don't recall.

Lol errr what about Kern, the PAFC people are ready to burn the place down.
I think him and Goodwin are in the spot light now.

Goodwin though, I am amazed at where the demons sit at the moment.

Didn't like reading that earlier. 2019 really hasn't worked out how he would have hoped after such a stellar first year breaking out of the blocks.

Hope he has a swift recovery but I doubt we will see him again this year.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

He's not in the same bracket as those blokes, but if the Dogs miss the finals this year and next Beverage probably gets asked some questions? And as I've said before, when does Leon Cameron feel the heat?

I think the under-performing coaches are lucky that there isn't much competition in the field atm, it's probably making boards settle for mediocrity and spasmodic success.
