All Aboriginal Team to take on Ireland

Apparently the AFL are sending an all Aboriginal team to Ireland

Is it racist to deny people the opportunity to play for their country because of the colour of their skin?

Serious question....

I agree with what you're saying. The question has to be asked.

If it was an all-white team (picked on that basis, of course) going to Ireland, there'd be a media uproar.

Yeah thats what I was thinking too.

It just seems the AFL seem to be over-complicating what "equality" is.

I saw this the other day. Kinda sums up what equality is.

Just asking the question. It seems to be topical at the moment.

Do other countries do this? Is there an "all-African/American" basketball team etc? Doesn't bother me personally but I see why the question is asked.

Definition of racism (n)
Bing Dictionary
ra·cism [ ráy sìzzəm ] 1.animosity toward other races: prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races
2.belief in racial superiority: the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior

The criteria for ANYTHING should not include what nationality you are.

If the AFL said it was a white only team going to Ireland, my first reaction would be "thats racist as ****".

I dont see how this is any different.

The answer to your question as you've conveniently worded it is of course, yes

But is that what an all-aboriginal team would be ... Australia's national team where white skinned people are denied the opportunity of playing for Australia? No.

We already have a National team for all sports that is not based on skin colour. Outside of the official national sides, in my mind you are allowed to make up teams however you want so long as the motivation is not racist referring to the definition I just posted. Who cares? Make an all red-headed team for all I care.

It's like saying an all-girls school is sexist.

Given that the motivation behind the inception is to celebrate the indigenous footprint on our game, the answer is no.

So long as they don't go under the banner 'Australia' then no.
If it's an All-Aboriginal team then it's fine.
But if it's an 'Australian' team going away, then I think that's a load of horsesh*t.
Because then they're denying non-Aboriginals the right to represent their country.

I wonder if US-based Indian representative lacrosse teams face this sort of debate.

Or NZ Maori/Islander rugby/league teams.

As we saw with the Adam Goodes Saga, the intention of the action doesn't matter, but how it is taken.
Given some people are offended by it, then the answer is clearly yes, it is racist.

Why would it be offensive?

I don't know, you'll have to ask them.

For me if they are calling it an all-australian team I would have a problem with it, but if it's an all-aborigional team (which I assume is the case going by the title of this thread), then play on as far as I'm concerned.

Id guess that many people would view the little kid getting 2 boxes while the big kid gets none because he doesn't need it as unfair. Why do little kids get more its not our fault they are short? If he gets 2 boxes everyone should get 2 boxes otherwise it's size-ist.

It's an interesting picture. I think my interpretation is different to yours. I'm assuming though so i should ask what is your interpretation and why did you think it belonged in this thread?

I just thought it was interesting. When people talk about equality, most of the time they dont mean people should be treated equal or given equal opportunities, they mean the end result should be equal. That kinda makes things a bit different when you think about it.

In this case making everyone equal, the Australian side would consist of players picked for their footballing talent, no matter what nationality.

How they're doing it loosely falls under the Justice side of that picture, where one group of people are given a bigger advantage and assistance, just based on their race, and nothing else.

I think it being an Indigenous team is different to it being a regular Australian team with an attached racially based selection criteria.
