Chad Cornes basically said this would happen at the press conference he did yesterday. Said nobody in the back lines deserved to be dropped for Jonas. Jonas looks shot as an AFL player, just too slow these days. Good on the club for making tough call.

Has played as a key defender at 188cm and 90kg for 211 games using his body to break packs apart for 13 years, his body has taken a battering and can't play that role any longer, his body won't allow it.

PA V HW
HW ended up with 14-12 total score, including 11-7 in the 2nd half
PA need back Jonas in the defence ?

Port put the cue in the rack. Wouldn’t read anything into the second half

Watching Hinckley on the bench reminds me of Joe Biden. You just know he doesn't have access to the nuclear codes!

At first glance you could well think the front half was the catalyst for Port Adelaide's 38 point win over Geelong at Adelaide Oval but it's the back half that needs to be looked at in detail.

I spend plenty of time talking about Ports zone when we have the ball as they push up and create repeat inside 50's but last night, in the first term in particular, it was about defending and defending deep. Geelong were +41 for disposals at quarter time, they'd built that on the back of their midfield pressure, 194 to 172 pressure acts in that opening term and 19 inside 50's to 15 on the way to a 6 goal to 2 term. Geelong had the game on their terms and it was getting played in their half. Deep in defence Aliir was holding up in the air (2 intercept marks) and returning Burton (3 intercept possessions) helping out on the ground. Rohan was causing no end of grief for the defenders, he was hot and the Cats were purring.

In the second term Port managed to change the clearance battle as Lycett took his dominance over Blicavs to the advantage of Drew and Wines in particular while having 3 himself (5 for the game). Once the contest is even or to Port's advantage and possessions going our way the spread and speed of the midfield is difficult to counter. Houston, Rozee and Butters with 7 touches each for the term and Drew with 4 touches, 2 clearances (8 for the game) and 2 tackles started to have an impact. Two late goals to Finlayson and club debutant Narkle (8 touches for the term) has the deficit back to 7 points at half time. No surprise when Houston, Rozee and Butters get hands on the ball that Port go from 59% disposal efficiency in the first term to 70% in the second term.

Now, that third quarter. Dangerfield has the first for the Cats but from here on in it was rollicking good fun as Adelaide Oval came to life. Goals to Powell-Pepper (OMG), Finlayson, Marshall and Byrne-Jones as Port have 5 of the first 6 clearances and kick 3 goals directly from them. Drew added one, Marshall and Finlayson have another each and it's a 7 goal blitz in 18 minutes.

Hinkley talks about "Your turn", the opposition will always have moments where the game is on their terms but when its "Your turn" with momentum you have to use it and the 11 game winning streak Port is on is very much on the back of that. When we get "out turn" at the moment we make sides pay and we can do it fast. The midfield is dynamic, the forward line well balanced with 3 talls and 3 high pressure smalls locking it in.

Henry, O'Connor and Smith goaled either side of three quarter time to bring the game back to 11 points but that was short lived. Powell-Pepper, Narkle, Finlayson and McEntee (5 fwd 50 tackles - Port 14 to 1 after quarter time) added the last 4 of the match for Port to walk away 38 point victors. Yes. Indeed.

Want to make mention of Bergmans game on Cameron, he kept him to 10 touches, 1 mark and just 30% disposal efficiency while having an unusually quiet 6 touches for the night. He focused heavily on his defensive game, won't get many plaudits because of his numbers but he did an outstanding job.

Boons best - Houston, Rozee, Powell-Pepper, Marshall, Finlayson, Butters, Lycett

Booney & other Port supporters do you have faith in Trent McKenzie to get it done down back come the crunch time in the season ahead?

Looked like last night Rohan was going to take him to the cleaners but he bounced back. He would be one of your only real questions marks now I think?

I've put in my mid year review the way we're setting up now has McKenzie dropping off more, Aliir playing on someone and Bergman playing the role Jonas did as the third man in.

The system has changed a fair bit back there and it's working well. I guess, like any defender, it's the pressure up the ground that makes their role easy / hard and at the moment McKenzie's job is getting made easier by that pressure.

Our defenders now are our best kicks ( Bergman, Houston, Burton, Williams, Farrell ) and our forward the "ugly" pressure ( SPP, McEntee, DBJ ).

Disclaimer; I didn't see myself saying this 10 weeks ago.

The big out for us this week was Lachie Jones who, since assuming Tom Jonas' role, has been absolutely outstanding. Boon has astutely noted that Aliir no longer plays the intercept role, which McKenzie is now playing (no doubt speed of ball movement the focus there with his penetrating kick). Farrell, Houston and Burton push high up as part of the zone defence, with Houston almost playing the traditional wingman role, given how high he gets & how much stoppages he contests.

Because we didn't want to give up the contested battle last night, the aforementioned flankers were able to continue their roles in spite of Geelong's scoreboard dominance in the 1st - Ken backing in his mids to fix their cleanliness and win the midfield battle. McKenzie was forced to a direct matchup, rather than playing the intercept role. He is not a 1:1 defender for the nimble smalls/mobile mid size forwards, so it's no surprise Rohan took him to the cleaners early. Rohan's influence wasn't a factor once we slowed down Geelong's transition and got numbers back into defence.

Had Jones had the matchup on Rohan, I reckon that first quarter would have looked very different. Not only is Jones proving to be exceptionally strong in 1:1 contests, he possesses lightening pace for a bigger bodied defender, and a penetrating kick. He would have given Rohan the physical attention that McKenzie couldn't.

Ken Hinkley’s contract discussions are set to drift until the end of the finals series to allow him clean air to strive for the first premiership of his senior coaching career.

Port Adelaide and Hinkley had both been clear that they will first consider his contract in August.

The move was put in place to push back any discussion over his contract at a time when it was considered likely the Power might move him on for assistant Josh Carr for the 2024 season.

But Hinkley’s astounding coaching performance and the rise of the Port Adelaide midfield has put him in a position of strength as the Power continue on an incredible 11-match win streak.

The Power have had no discussions with his manager Peter Blucher about what happens once they hit August and there are no plans yet in place about how those negotiations might take place.

With no framework for a deal in place it seems impossible a deal would be done before the end of the home-and-away season.

Further indicates my belief this is a managed outcome that is already in place
