I too used to think like the last 3 posters, ie PAMFC = New Club, PAFC = Old Club
But its not so.
The official legal documents how that the PAFC changed its name to the PAMFC in 1996 so a new entity could inherit the PAFC name.
So in essence the Port Adelaide Football Club ie Power are an entity created in 1996.
The Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club are an entity that have been around since 1870 BUT they changed their name legally in 1996 from the PAFC to the PAMFC.
It was the only way it could be done.
ie players that had contracts with the PAFC in 1995 still had the same contract in 1996, they didn't need to sign new ones as it was the same business/club/entity they were playing for.
HOWEVER and to prove the point, players who played with the PAFC in 1995 (known as the Magpies) and played for the PAFC in 1996 (known as the Power) DID require new contracts as they were being employed by a completely new business/club/entity.
End of discussion.

From my perspective that determines that PAMFC Inc is the original club, and that the Power have to accept themselves as a subsidiary branch of that club if they want to lay claim to any roots prior to 1995.Mark_Beswick wrote:PAMFC Inc, have the association number A1764, which was issued in 1951. All they did was change their name from PAFC to PAMFC at the end of 1996. They still have this association number, how can an incorporated club take someone elses licence if they are new?
PAFC (AFL) Ltd, ACN 068 839 547 was registered in 1995 and changed their name to PAFC Ltd after the Magpies changed theirs.

One could try and argue both new clubs as well
Another interesting argument was that PAFC changed their name during the SANFL season. If they were a new club then why weren't their premiership points scrubbed when they changed to the Magpies meaning they would have missed the SANFL finals and not won a GF.
My stats have the PAMFC starting in 1870 and the Power when they started in the AFL
