Sturt Desert Pea - Old emblem

Postby Mark_Beswick » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:57 pm

Does anyone have a scanned colour image (jpeg) of West Adelaide's emblem "Sturt Desert Pea". An artist was after a copy of a logo the club used in the 1930's and I dont have a working scanner. I know all the old WAFC annual reports use the pea which was ultimatley superceded by the wolf / blood'n tars logo sometime in the 1950's

Sorry I cant help with your request, but I do have a question arising from it:

When did the WAFC become, and cease becoming, the Wolves and the the Bloods and the Blood and Tars etc? They seem to have been known by a number of different names at different times, and I've never quite worked out when each name started or ended (or continues to be in place!).

When I was a child they were the Blood'n'tars. I believe that theystill had the Desert Pea emblem when they won the 1961 premiership. Dan Russell of the Sunday Mail used to produce a poster similar to WEG in Melbourne and he drew a bloodhound to represent West in their premiership poster. The next change was when Fos Williams became coach in 1974, he changed the guernsey from the sash to red and black stripes and the nickname to the Wolves. I am not sure whether they changed back to the Bloods when Trevor Hughes took over in 1979 or when Kerley came back in 1981, but it certainly was around that time that they reverted to the sash and the nickname the bloods. In their club song they still refer to themselves as the Blood'n'tars.

Page 108 of 2010 SANFL Season Guide has logos from 1978.

West Adelaide logo has "THE BLOODS" woth a wolf standing on a football.

From memory in 1980 they changed to the WOLVES with the return of the sash.

Don't forget the Bottletops!

Incidentally, I remember my old man speaking to me as a kid, telling me that Westies weren't really the Wolves, they were the "Bloodentahs". For years afterwards I thought a Bloodentah was some sort of dog, as depicted on Westies logo

IIRC They were only The Wolves for one season (1980).
BTW Mark I have a scanner so I'll see what I can find and get back to you.

My recollection is that Kerley made us revert to the sash when he returned in 1981.

I thought the whole thing first started around the late 1950s/early 1960s when there was a bit of "Victorianisation" going on across the SANFL.
Killigrew had turned Norwood into the "Demons" with a red V on the jumper, and Westies fell for the idea that the "Wolves" had a more assertive stand about it.
I can't remember the dates accurately as I was a kid then, but I was glad to see both go.
I'm not sure whether it was Neil Kerley who got rid of the bloods striped jumper, just as he opposed Centrals appalling white socks, or whether the Victorianisation occurred at Westies a little later than at Norwood, under M Weideman.

Would look pretty good if West added some of the actual Desert Pea plants to the landscaping project that they are working on, just not sure how well they grow in Suburban Adelaide as they are supposed to be found in arid type climate areas!

Westies were certainly the Blood'n'tars when they played in 1961 and remained so for all of the 1960s. If Leaping Lindner says that they were only the Wolves for one season, 1980, I would defer to him, he is an expert in this sort of thing. Westies certainly wore the black with the red sash for all of the 1960s, Kerley definitely changed them back to the sash in 1981 as he had done with Glenelg in 1967 and West Torrens in 1977. He must have loved sashes. Glenelg had been wearing a yolked Vee for a few years prior to 1967 and Torrens had toyed with a number of outfits prior to them reverting to their sash.

I am thinking West Adelaide changed from "Blood n Tars" to "Bloods" around mid 70s, and changed to Wolves around the time Trevor Hughes took over as coach in 1979. I'll see if I can find out for certain.

What I do know is they switched jumper from the black with red sash to red and black vertical stripes when Fos Williams became coach in 1974, and reverted back to the red sash in 1981 when Kerley coached again. I'm pretty sure they were the wolves in the striped jumper days.

Yeah I reckon they changed to The Bloods when the SANFL introduced the official logos in 1975. Prior to that I always remember them be refered to as the Blood and Tars.

I have dads old Wolves Jumper with number 1 on it when he was captain. I remember him saying that Kerls changed it back to the wolves. I think he said Fos introuduced the concept of Wolves becuase this animal hunted in packs. He is O.S at present so I cant ask him for a while.

I think the confusion stems from retaining the wolf logo long after we changed from Wolves to Bloods. I'll try to find out when this was.

Yep, that's what I was thinking as well. I have memory of the wolves image wit hthe word bloods on their logo. Somebody said they were trying to portray an aggressive type of dog rather than a docile bloodhound.

I remember the 'Desert Pea' emblem.

Both my old man & uncle played @ Westies in the early 60s.

My old man had a 'footy bag' with that particular emblem on it.
He also, used to refer to them as "The Blood n Tars" - I asked him about it, Blood (Red), Tar (Black)

As is obvious by the logo I use on this website, I just love the old fashioned emblems, and the Sturt Desert Pea was one I liked a lot. I've always thought they carried a certain dignity and much prefer them to the current logos. May not fit as well on the jumper though :)
