Went to the game at Footy Park expecting an easy win.

North stitched us up by 12 goals.

Yes, North also beat eventual finalist South by 90 points, lost to eventual premier Norwood by a point and Glenelg by three points. Of the other wins at least two of them against Woodville and
West were by over 10 goals.

It was very similar to South in 1963. Astute observers could see that they weren't faraway. In South's case getting Kerley as playing coach was a huge impetus and the final piece in the jigsaw, in North's case getting a number of players back from longterm injury in 1985 including Tony Antrobus was all that was needed to make North very competitive in 1985 winning their first 11 games and eventually playing in the Grand Final.

Stephen Kernahan and an awesome Glenelg side made sure though that we didn't have the fairytale that South had.

Have obtained a copy of the ABC's replay screened that night - sadly only highlights of the first three quarters. Great editing by the ABC in that era to try and make every match look close and exciting and not indicate that a thrashing was taking place. For the first quarter ABC showed 5 of Sturt's 8 goals and 3 of Torrens's 5 goals. They showed all 3 of the Eagles 2nd quarter goals and 2 of Sturt's 4 goals for that quarter. They showed 4 out of 7 Sturt 3rd quarter goals and only 1 of the 2 Torrens goals. So at three quarter time ABC had screened 11 Sturt goals to Torrens 7 although the score was Sturt 19.9 lead Torrens 10.9. Plenty of Schimmelbusch in the clips to confirm he played very well but not much of Pavlich & Sarau to justify their high ratings according to The Advertiser.
