Can it be posted on here, I'd be curious to read some of the former winners...

1990 M.KING Norwood
1991 D.BETTERMAN Norwood
1996 D.POVEY Norwood
Im familiar with most of their names and often wondered why some of them didn't translate their abilities at a higher level?

None of them played at league level. I can't say why not, I only know one of them personally, and although he was a good footballer, possibly lacked the foot speed to succeed at a higher level.
As you look down the lists, you notice a host of names in the underage competitions who went on to bigger and better things, but since the advent of the Crows, very few names have gone on with it, e.g. Adam Cooney, Lindsay Thomas, etc. Certainly in Under 19s, the cupboard is bare. I put this down to the changing face of football in this state where any kid with genuine talent wouldn't find himself still playing underage footy at 17 or 18, they'd be playing senior SANFL or drafted into the AFL.

The list that has always interested me most is the Reserves Magarey Medal. The list is a combination of veritable unknowns and players who not only went onto league football but also achieved higher than that (State, League Magarey, VFL/AFL, etc). The exception to this is John McInnes who put his footy career on hold for over 10 years due to studies and won his 3 medals in the twighlight of his footy life.

Thanks for that, I've changed it. Typed in haste ... that's my story and I'm sticking to it

He was a student at Rostrevor College and played in the 1st XVIII between 1953-56, being captain in 55 & 56, also winning the Gosse Medal as best player in the competition in both years.
In 1956 he also played Under 19s at Norwood, and found himself selected in the league team for the 1st Semi Final versus North Adelaide. For the next 10 years John studied and taught in Christian Brothers Schools in Melbourne and played no regular football in that time.
In 1967 he returned to Adelaide and attempted a comeback with Norwood, was put on the League training list, but injury forced another premature retirement. In 1968 he was appointed Reserves non-playing Coach. This was Robert Oatey's first season as senior coach. The problem Norwood had at this time was the exodus of senior players such as Ron Kneebone, Haydn Bunton, Bill Wedding, etc, and the club was devoid of on field experience.
John started playing again around mid-68, and won the Reserves Magarey Medal in 1969 as captain-coach. Further loss of Graham Molloy and Damien Nygaard saw Oatey bring in experienced players such as Don Roach and John McInnes for on field leadership. So, in round 1 1970 we saw John play his second league match against Port Adelaide at the Parade, 14 years after his debut, a match remembered most for the stunning debut of Phil Carman.
He was a well balanced player, never hurried, always chose the correct option, and rarely missed a target. He played more like a seasoned veteran of 200 games rather than someone playing their 2nd league match.
John was a regular in the team until round 8, 1971, when his job was done. The recruitment of players such as John Wynne, and the improvement of a new wave of young players saw John's return to the Reserves where he picked up a further two medals.
My enduring memory of John was for the most perfect hip and shoulder bump laid at Woodville Oval on Noel Teasdale. Although the bump was perfectly legal in every way, Teasdale's wonky knee buckled, thus ending his career. John was technically one of the best players I've seen at Norwood.
