Here's an obscure one - Ben Aulich Canberra to South to Glenelg. Aulich and Robbie Neill were part of a pre-draft deal between the Swans and Essendon. Essendon would let Sydney have both of them, provided the Swans didn't pick James Hird. Pretty even deal!

That sounds a bit like draft tampering/manipulation to me. I wonder if the AFL authorised it.

Nothing to do with the AFL. Just another example of the stupidity of Sydney's recruiting in that era. :) Essendon was the only other club that rated Hird at all. If the Swans had done the sensible thing and taken Hird ..... thank goodness they didn't.

Some of Sydney's pre-draft trading and pre-season draft picks around that time defied description. David Strooper, particularly in his second season, comes to mind here immediately. Glenelg fans are probably shaking their heads at this one.

No. Essendon were the only club to find a loophole in the rules and organise a deal with Sydney. At the time, and for a few years prior, Sydney were allowed first crack at any NSW junior, similar to how West Coast and Adelaide had a moratorium on WA & SA kids for their first couple of seasons. Other clubs could only draft NSW players after Sydney had stated they did not want them. Essendon were simply smart enough to manipulate the rules. Thats the only reason he went so late.

Reakon most club's drafting and trading was pretty much amateur hour back then.

Wasn't Hird, by his own admission, a pretty ordinary junior?

Did family connections play a part in Sheedy taking the punt on him?

Pretty weak draft in 1990 thanks to the Crows...
