1994..the tony lynn debacle (mid season draft)

Postby bayman » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:18 pm

what do you guys think of the afl having a mid season draft ? (which has been mooted to return) personally i think it shows a total lack of respect to the other competitions in the land, which happened to centrals' tony lynn in 1994 when drafted to carlton & it would've put a big dampener on their quest for their first flag back then......i'll presume it happened to others & surely the afl couldn't bring that back again....or could they ?

personel opinion, tony lynn was a very good player
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Tony Lynn was one of my first 'favourite' players growing up as a kid...

I'll never forget the day I met my 2 favourite footy players, Tony Lynn and Grant Coffee, the day I got to be Doggies mascot and lead the players out onto the ground.

As for the mid-season draft bayman, I think it would be a terrible thing for the SANFL and not fair on the club(s) that may lose star players without being able to replace them.

Wasn't Tony Lynn drafted in 1993? He immediately went over to Carlton but didn't make his AFL debut until round 3, 1994. As far as I can remember he was the only player drafted mid season who immediately left the SANFL to try his luck in the AFL.

Other mid season draftees who never ventured out of the state included :

Mark Naley 1991 South Adelaide - Footscray
Rod Saunders 1991 North Adelaide - Essendon
Peter Bennett 1991 North Adelaide - Brisbane
Tim Perkins 1992 North Adelaide - North Melbourne

Tim Perkins in 1993 was drafted by the Crows mid season, but never played and AFL game, even though he had been on 3 lists, Brisbane, North Melbourne and Adelaide.

He would vie with Darren Bartsch for being on the most lists without playing a game. I think though that Bartsch would have him covered.

In 1993 he won a Fos Williams Medal for his performance for South Australia in an interstate match against Western Australia. He also represented a combined Northern Territory and Queensland interstate team the same year, in a win over Tasmania in Hobart. His efforts caught the eyes of the Carlton recruiters and he made a return to the AFL in 1994 after being picked up in the mid-season draft.[2]

you maybe very well correct, i just read it as 1994 after reading this on wiki

I always thought it was 1994, and seemed to remember him playing the first eight games of the SANFL season that year - there was mild speculation about whether he could poll top three in the Magarey with so few games under his belt.
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

Definitely drafted after his state games in 1993. Left Central in the middle of 1993, and definitely made his Carlton debut round 3, 1994. The Carlton website has all of this information, other than they only mention his performance for the "Allies", no mention of his Fos Williams medal (which he definitely won).

Lynn was the heart and soul of Centrals back then, only good player in an ordinary side for a year or two. Not sure what difference he'd have made from 94-97 had he hung around.

But I do recall hearing that he played for 3 different sides in 3 weeks in the middle of 1993, Centrals one week, SA the next then over to Melbourne the week after or something to play for the Carlton reserves.
