rule change...when did this one change ?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

rule change...when did this one change ?

Postby bayman » Wed Feb 16, 2011 6:29 pm

out of bounds on the full

i've had a bet with my boss & i'm sure this rule was introduced in the 1950s when teams were wasting time by kicking it out (on the full) & at that stage it was a boundary throw in, he reckons it was in the 1970's or at the earliest the late 1960's

the bet is i have 1945-1965

he has 1966-too now

any articles would be good to print off, presuming i'm correct ;)

thanks spelly or whoever else knows

The VFL changed to out on the full in 1969, but I think Adelaide Hawk has stated that the SANFL changed the following year and not 1969. Certainly it was either 1969 or 1970.

There have been heaps of stupid rule changes over the past 15 years. I am repeating myself here, but I say lets go back to exactly what the rules were in 1993. Save for the centre circles, because even though it may not be traditional, it seems to have cut down on ruckman injuries.

Yes, the SANFL tried out the rule in the curtain raiser to the 1969 Grand Final. It was played between Norwood (Reserves Premiers) and University (A1 Amateur League Premier). It was introduced at League level in Round 1 1970.

Prior to that they had a rule for placing a ball deliberately out of bounds. Can't recall the rule but I imagine it would have come under time wasting. The ball didn't have to be kicked out on the full. Having said that, the VFL introduced out on the full because it was becoming farcical with players such as Ron Barassi just booting the ball out of bounds for a boundary throw in.

It had to be that late - kicking out of bounds continuously in the last quarter was one of the standard strategies of the SANFL Magpies in their premiership winning days...
[Along with maiming the opposition's better players.]
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

I don't actually mind the rule changes. Fair enough people might prefer the style from another era, but teams exploit rules differently now than they did back then. The rules have simply changed over time to keep the game a good spectacle, keep it fair for both sides and more importantly keep the game safe. Players are much bigger and stronger now, and can run a lot faster so the likelihood of injuries is a lot higher than it was in days gone by.

Why do you pick 1993?

I would support your idea if all the coaches had to pull out the 1993 tactics book and strictly stick with that as well

Otherwise we'd have a mess if you only restrict one side of the equation (ie the rules) but let the coaches have free reign. They'd go to town.

I honestly think if let alone the coaches would turn our game into something like rugby union with rolling packs of players moving up and down the field.

Because I don't think anything changed after then has done the game any good. IMO of course.

The coaches are not blameless though

There was no rule change that brought in flooding for example

Coaches, players, clubs .. all to blame. No matter what rules are in place, there will always be someone looking to use them to their advantage. If everyone played to the spirit of the game, we wouldn't need rule changes .... but we all know that will never happen.

Oh yeah, I blame coaches too. They specifically try to exploit the rules, and always to the negative. But I'd rather see ruckman belt the ball out of bounds than players going half of the field backwards, chipping the ball around.

The one rule the AFL has got right is protecting the player with his head lowered to pick up the ball from a hip-and-shoulder style bump. Of course, they have taken this far too far, such as Franklin suspended for his bump on Cousins, and players ducking their heads receiving frees more than ever it seems.
