I'll do Torrens first:
F: Primmer Tierney Morphett
HF: Muir Johnston Barrott
C: Cassin Shearman Wallace
HB: Elliott Grambeau Keast
B: Bartlett Carey Christensen
R: Sarau Galt Birt
Int: Schimmelbusch Taylor Thoms
Coach: Reynolds

Spelly:

I showed my Dad this thread and he wrote this;

Keast was a ruckman – hbf??

came from Footscray – was a reserve player who couldn’t crack a game – won medals etc – they wouldn’t clear him – not sure how long he played for – he was ok without setting the world on fire – his first game was a good one for us after the clearance issue and we played above ourselves as did he – don’t know game or result though – in your book of results probably – end of the 60’s – maybe early 70’s.

There are too many ruckmen in that team!

It's hard to determine which game was after the clearance bit, but this is his career with Torrens:
1974: 9 games 9 goals 7 behinds (Played Round 3, was injured then came back from Round 16 onwards)
1975: 6 games 9.6 (The first 5 matches, kicked 5 goals in Round 5, then was injured and his only other match was Round 16)
Total: 15 games 18 goals 13 behinds

I think Fragomeni was from WAFL so he could probably fit into a back pocket or on the bench.

Ambrose could probably slot into full back.

Not sure there'd be room for Wes Fellowes though

I certainly had Fragomeni in my side, as well as Ray Huppatz (if allowed under the rules), Robert Whatman, Garry Smallridge, Ryan O'Connor and a certain Hayden Bunton Snr. I'd also slip in Mark Lawson as he stayed at our place when he first moved to Adelaide to play for Port.

Looking at the powerful Norwood and Port line-ups in this thread, you see some real impact SANFL players. Gives some insight maybe in to why those teams performed so well in the pre Crows and Power days. I guess success breeds success and if you have the record, you attract the recruits.

Port's team also partly explains their dominance in the 90s. Their imminent AFL entry seemed to be a useful carrot to attract quality recruits which, along with the retention of home-bred AFL prospects such as Carter, Mead, Poole and co made them very, very competitive in that era. 9 flags in 12 years from 1988-1999.

Interesting list, Bessie.

If you leave out those who went from West to other states and leave out those who were mini-drafted to West, you're left with a lot of very good small on-ballers and all positions except ruckmen.

I also don't know where Bob Snell played (Magarey Medal) or Jack Sexton and whether they played interstate after Westies, so I'll leave them out.

First effort:

Backwell A Richardson Haynes

Mike Smith Simister Kilpatrick

Carlson Borchard Kennedy

Walsh Dreher Watson

McLuckie Stevenson Winton

D Murray Banik Hogan

Int: Take your pick of the following, most of whom should probably be in the team anyway.

Banfield
Barrett
D Bradshaw
Woodhall
Harbinson
Hollick
Tuck
Myles
Cordy
Winton
Wallis
Howard
C Herbert
D Herbert
Dragicevic
and those I've missed.

Didn't take long

Missed Craig Williams.

Immediately insert him at full-back, please.

Sorry Craig.

First of many changes to come, I expect, but it was a quick effort just for the sake of it.

Not sure about Diesel (D Murray), but I didn't have ruckman.

I don't think he was from Renmark (?), perhaps just over the border somewhere, so he might be a ring-in for this team.

Mark Stewart was from Vic, but I don't know if he would be eligible.

Sturt, but only back as far as my memory goes. I'm unsure if Candles Thompson was originally a Vic: I know he came to Sturt via Hawthorn.

B M.Keane G.Ryan W.May
HB M.Pitura G.Hardeman M. Delahunty
C B. Colreavy R. Shearman S. O'keefe
HF E. Langridge L. Fitzgerald W. Johnson
F L. Schachke J. Arnol M.Hill
1R C.Thompson C.Saddington R.Dawe*

* Roly Dawe came to Sturt on a one year deal from the WAFL, where he was a top rover, in around '74. He found it very hard to break into the side, but when given the chance showed his class. Like Gary Hardeman, he came specifically to experience Jack Oatey's coaching. I'm pretty certain he won the Reserves Magarey that year.

Hardeman/Shearman/Fitgerald. Beat that for those 3 key positions!

Candles Thompson was originally from Sturt.
Technically, Shearman was recruited from West Torrens.

So M.Hill into first ruck and Brant Chambers [a Vic, via WAFL and NTFL] into the full forward line.
We recruited some good players from Mildura too, but I don't know if they played VFL/VFA first, or came straight to Sturt.

Re: Shearman, I think he came to Sturt on an open clearance, having stood out for a year as Torrens refused to clear him. So we'll take him anyway.

I thought Stephen Richardson played some good football for the Legs, and had one very good year, but in general I found his form to be inconsistent. Could play some brilliant footy, but also played too many poor games in the mix.

Fair assessment of the "Tan Man" AH .. Played almost as though he was more worried about his looks and didn't live up to (what was arguably) the pretty high reputation he came with - was exposed for pace quite regularly.
