1989 Port Adelaide SANFL Draw

Postby Doc Neeson » Tue May 15, 2007 9:37 pm

Does anyone have the draw and results from the 1989 season for PAFC?

It was one of their most successful seasons and just was wondering who, when and where they won.

Reakon this was the strongest, most balanced team from the 1988-1989-1990 hat-trick of premierships...

absolutely...

also, round 21, one of the best games of football I've EVER seen in my life... (despite the score)

from memory (and correct me if im wrong) the team lined up something like this for the best part of the year...

f: Hynes Hodges Brown

HF: R.Smith D.Smith Mahney

c: Hutton Williams Tregenza

HB: Abernathey Phillips Northeast

B: Boyd Delaney Fiacchi

1R: Johnston, Ginever,Settre

I think i may have missed Phil Harrison in there somewhere, and cant remember wether Richard Foster played as well

As a young biased Legs supporter at the time, I thought we would have been a chance against Port if we'd been good enough to meet them in the finals, from memory we won Elim and 1st semi but then dropped to bogey team North in the Prelim.

Looking back I reckon I was just that, biased ... Port teams in those hattrick years were awesome, can still remember thinking after they beat us at the parade early in 88' that they were in for something special.

Spot on CP - Norwood beat Glenelg in the Elim (14-13 to 14-8 and then Centrals in the 1st Semi (15-15 to 12-10). Then lost to North 17-19 to 13-7.

Port's premiership team was:

F: Hynes, Hodges, Brown
HF: R Smith, D Smith, Mahney
C: Hutton, S Williams, Tregenza
HB: Abernethy, Phillips, Northeast
B: Fiacchi, Delaney, G Boyd
IR: Johnston, Obst, Ginever
Int: R Boyd, Harrison

No Settre? Must have been injured?

Very strong team altho North were closer to them during the year than the GF result suggests

Also interesting to look at the high crowd figures .... '89 was close to the end of an era in the SANFL
In between signatures .....

Andew Obst as well.

Richard Foster was in and out of the team (14 games) after a great debut season in 1988.

Russell Boyd hit a purple patch late in the year.

Whereas Adrian Settre started the year with a bang but faded.

Boyd cemented his place in the team when he kicked four goals in that round 21 classic.

The following year, Boyd was dropped from the grand final team for missing a recovery session after the preliminary final.

Guess who replaced him?

That's right - Settre. Played the game of his life, too kicking three important goals in the 15 point win...

Obst definitely played in 1989.

Probably should've got the Jack Oatey Medal.

He crossed to Melbourne in 1990...

89 was a good year.

Started with the Foundation Cup win against Glenelg thanks to a miracle Hodges goal with a couple of minutes left.

Qualifying Final was something interesting. Down by 13 points at half time to the Dogs, we kicked 17 goals to 2 in the 2nd half to end up winning by 85 points. Surely one of the bigger turn arounds in a finals match.

Similar result against North in the 2nd Semi as well. Down by a couple of goals at half time, a 10 goal to 4 second half saw us over the line. The Grand Final was a non event.

Saw the debut of Darren Mead that year, playing 9 games. Was Tregenzas break through year. Played every match for the season and finished 2nd in the Magarey Medal, all this at just 18 years of age. Settre and Northeast also had their breakout years. Paul Rizonicos first year at the club.

Good times.
