That match

Postby SimonH » Wed Jul 04, 2007 11:56 pm

Hey spelly, there are heaps of questions that leap to mind arising from a certain match played in a northerly direction on 30 June 2007. Apart from, 'How do I get that 2 hours of my life (and my team's dignity) back?' Among them:

1. Where does it rank in the biggest wins of all time in the SANFL? (Norwood's biggest win of all time was coincidentally by exactly 158 points over the Eags in 1995.)
2. Is it the biggest loss ever suffered by a team that was in the top 5 (4) at the time the match was played?
3. What's the biggest loss ever suffered by a team that went on to make the finals that year? (Trying to create a little optimism for the future.)

I do have a program at the moment that opens Excel files, but it's rather slow. But I can tell you info from them, it doesn't affect it that way. (Just for those that know my Excel is playing up at the moment)

Anyway, it's the equal 17th biggest win of all time. I can't answer no.2 comprehensively because that would require opening two programs at once, something the program can't handle, but West Torrens were in the 5 (2 wins, 1 loss) when Central won by 198 points in 1988. In 1973, North lost to Glenelg by 160 points, and that's the biggest ever loss sustained by a team that eventually made the finals.

And as for getting the dignity back, well, try getting it back when your team loses by 125 points in a GF. :( The only way to get some of it back is to beat them in a Grand Final. ;)

As always, you're a star, spelly. The fact that it's 'only' #17 means that rather than feeling bad, I should feel good that for decades Norwood (presumably) didn't even feature on the bad end of any of the 50 biggest losses of all time.

North made the GF in 1973, and nearly won it, after a 160 point loss to the same opponents during the year? That's sure some turnaround! I presume that B. Robran must have been injured-- hard to imagine that it's physically possible that he could have been playing in a side that lost by that amount.

I didn't even ask what the biggest loss by a side that went on to win the flag was, because I was so certain that it must be Norwood's 102(-ish) point loss to Centrals at 'bef in 1984. Although hearing about 1973 makes we wonder whether it is possible that a premier-to-be has had a dirtier day. Not that I'm so insanely optimistic that I think there's any chance the record might be broken in 2007.

Not quite as bad as 1934, the premier actually got thrashed by 100+ points earlier in the season by the runner-up and beaten by 12 goals in the 2nd semi.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I'm not sure...how long do you think you'll live for? ;) You don't know what could happen to either side (or yourself) in the future.

The 1934 match Tassie has brought up is the record loss for a side which eventually won the flag in that year (Port 33.19 to Glenelg 12.14), 131 points in Round 4 1934.

The last loss Norwood had over 100 points was in 1987 - Glenelg 24.14 (158) to Norwood 8.10 (58) in Round 10.
