Captain and coached a flag

Postby smithy » Sat Jul 28, 2007 12:26 am

During the Bulldogs/Eagles match it was mentioned that Worsfold is only the 6th person to Captain and coach an AFL/VFL premiership team.

I thought that figure was a little low.

How many times has it been done in the SANFL ?

plenty of captain/coaches
Mike Patterson - NA
Jack Oatey - Nwd
Bob Quinn - PA
Fos Williams - PA
Geoff Motley - PA
Neil Kerley - SA & WA
Frank Golding - St
Bo Morton - St
Bruce McGregor - WA

and
Jack Oatey also won as a coach with Sturt
Neil Kerley also won as a coach with Glenelg

and
S. White captained Norwood in 1922 and 1923 in premierships and captained/coached to a premiership in 1925

I am sure Spelly can fill in any gaps

Most of them have been players who captained/coached a side, but there are more than the V/AFL:

Frank Golding (Sturt): 1926 capt, coach
Bruce McGregor (West): 1927 capt, coach
Walter Scott (Norwood): 1929 capt, coach
Bob Quinn (Port): 1939 capt, coach
Parker Morton (Sturt): 1940 capt, coach
Jack Oatey (Norwood): 1946, 1948, 1950 capt, coach; (Sturt) 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1976 coach
Fos Williams (Port): 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 capt, coach; 1962, 1963, 1965 coach
Geof Motley (Port): 1959 capt, coach; 1962, 1963 1965 capt
Neil Kerley (South): 1964 capt, coach (West) 1961 capt, coach; 1983 coach (Glenelg) 1973 coach

Spelly this may sound like a silly question but did Reedman actually play at West or just coach?
I've been researching an article on him lately and he was a larger than life character. He'd be one of the few (if not the only player) to have captained four teams (Hotham, North Adelaide (mark 2), South Adelaide, North Adelaide (mark 3) ).

Not sure, I know he coached them, but don't know about playing for them.

I think Bruce McGregor also coached Glenelg's first premiership in 1934?

Tom Leahy captained North's 1920 Premiership and then coached Norwood to back to back Premierships in 1922-23.
