Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Scott Spalding - 1994
Anthony Darcy - 1995

There's a few instances of Fos Williams bringing players back from the country for the finals.

IIRC, Ray Whitaker and Ian Hannaford both played in Port premiership teams after playing in the country during the year.

Tony Martyn went back home after his one year at Alberton - either Tasmania or Victoria?

Good result for Tony Martyn then if he got one year for one flag.

Having dealt with Bruce Abernethy and Dwayne Russell a bit, it's always amused me that Abba had about 7-8 years in VFL footy but still got about 8 flags in his ten years or so at Port at the back and front of his career while Dwayne was exactly the opposite and had 6-7 years at Port and somehow didn't manage to play in a single flag. Very strange.

Abba timed his career at Alberton to perfection...

1979 - 1981: Premierships in 1979, 1980, 1981
1987 - 1992: Premierships in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992

That makes seven premierships in nine seasons - incredible.

Dwayne Russell, on the other hand, couldn't have timed it worse - the mid-80s were perhaps Port's most tumultuous years.

He should've got one. Doesn't exactly help when you come charging in like a bull to bowl someone over moments after the league's leading goalkicker has marked and is about to goal from five metres out dead in front. Until the ump blows his whistle and pays a free kick to the opposition...

I suspect we have vastly different views on how much we enjoyed each of the 1980 GF, the 1984 GF, the 1997 GF and the 1999 GF then.

Very nice cheap shot CP. Very reminiscent of exactly the cheap shot Dwayne put on Lester Ross on the day itself.

Diverging off the SANFL for a moment, Greg Madigan for Hawthorn in 1989.

It is probably worth a poll though to discover whether it's better to beat Port in a Grand final by a few points (84) when you're the underdog or whether its better to beat Port in a Grand Final comprehensively (97) and you just enjoy the whole day knowing that it's in the bag.

LOL call me paranoid, but I drank 3/4's of a bottle of Whiskey in the Crows tavern from 3/4 Time to before the final siren in 97' just because I kept expecting some miracle Port comeback and tragic loss ... Was only really the last 5-10 minutes I enjoyed ... I blame Hodges and the previous seasons prelim!!

Lord. I thought I was paranoid when I was convinced Geelong could actually still lose up to the five min mark of the third quarter this year?!?!?!?!?!? You got me covered.

You watch both replays and both of those games are over by 15 mins. I just didn't realise it at the time with the Cats this year and obviously you were a bit gunshy a decade ago.

I think it was because all my mates are Port fans and had that usual confidence/arrorgance that no deficit was unrecoverable ... I must adnmit though, that whilst they won't admit it, they generally weren't as cocky about Port-Norwood games.

Thankfully it was my best mate who lost our bet and had to follow me to the Parade that evening/next morning to celebrate/drown sorrows :D :D :D

Shane Crothers is one I always think of as being fairly lucky.

Came to Port in 96 from Geelong. Didnt play many games, maybe 6 or 7. Comes in for Pooley in the big one and wins a premiership whilst sitting on the bench for most of the day. Prety sure he played less than 20 games in total. He should have played in 97 GF. I marked that down as one of the reasons why Norwood got well on top.

Reakon that was just Norwood's year.

And the fact we played our grand final two weeks early...

I think Norwood would have won anyway, but playing one ruckmen for the last 3-4 games we played that year was always a danger in my opinion. Having to play Tredrea in the ruck for 3 1/2 quarters took away our most dangerous forward and also made sure we were thrashed in the middle.
