Who was filed umpire for

Postby Mark_Beswick » Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:26 pm

Can anyone help?

I have Umpire JL Sweney umpiring two games on the same day in two different states.

I have im umpiring a State game on June 25, 1960 WA v VIC
I also have him at Unley oval on June 25 officiating the NA v ST Clash

Can anyone shed any light on the filed umpire for the NA v ST game?

Regards

"....South Australian umpire Jack Sweeney pleased officials from both States with his interpretation of the rules. He allowed the game to flow smoothly and gave protection to the players going for the ball....."

Mark, I read a very similar comment about Sweeney about his umpiring in one of the carnivals. I think it was Perth 56, and the article went on to say (for memory) that Sweeney was thinking of moving to Perth to live. Sounds as though Sweeney and WA football had a mutual admiration.

Was this not Lawrie Sweeney, the former ADS7 World of Sport panellist?

Apparently Laurie Sweeney was instrumental in Ports 5 premierships in the 1950's.

He certainly didn't notice a lot of rough stuff outside the rules that went on in that era.
