Magarey Winners by numbers

Postby Footy Chick » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:15 pm

This thought popped into my head earlier today.

The number that the Magarey winner wore in his winning year. Has there been a number that's won it more than others?

As far as I know, players began wearing numbers from 1914 (that was the first edition of the football budget) but players did wear numbers in the 1912 GF for some reason.

Here are the numbers for the Magarey Medallists 1914 to 1949:

1914 Jack Ashley PA 21
1915 Frank Barry SA 9
1915 Shine Hosking PA 4
1915 Charles Perry N 13
1919 Dan Moriarty SA 2
1920 Dan Moriarty SA 2
1921 Dan Moriarty SA 2
1921 Walter Scott N 7
1921 Vic Richardson S 8
1921 John Karney WT 2
1922 Robert Barnes WA 5
1923 Horrie Riley S 7
1924 Walter Scott N 7
1925 Alick Lill N 3
1925 Peter Bampton PA 3
1926 Bruce McGregor WA 1
1927 Bruce McGregor WA 1
1928 Jim Handby G 15
1929 Richard Snell WA 8
1930 Walter Scott N 1
1931 Jack Sexton SA 12
1932 Max Pontifex WT 2
1933 Keith Dunn S 7
1934 George Johnston G 3
1935 Jack Cockburn SA 5
1936 Bill McCallum N 18
1937 Harold Hawke NA 9
1938 Bob Quinn PA 6
1939 Jeff Pash NA 4
1939 Ray McArthur WA 2
1940 Mel Brock G 8
1941 Marcus Boyall G 2
1945 Bob Quinn PA 1
1946 Bob Hank WT 5
1947 Bob Hank WT 1
1948 Ron Phillips NA 10
1949 Ron Phillips NA 10
1949 Allan Crabb G 1

I don't have Ray McArthur in 1939 but I can find that out today.

Watch this space :)

And some corrections:

You missed Jim Deane in 1957 who wore 12
Nathan Buckley wore 34 in 1992, not 32.
Andrew Osborn wore 6 in 1998, not 7
Ryan O'Connor wore 30 in 2001, not 18
Brett Ebert wore 7 in 2003, not 33. That's his AFL number :)

A Hawk, "Blue" Johnston's name is on locker number #4 in the Change rooms at Glenelg.

I'm not aware of him wearing number 3.

Ecky??
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

That is very interesting. I took my numbers from the Football Budget, and they have him as playing in number 3. I'll have another look today because Glenelg would surely know better about their players than I would.

Maybe he played the 1934 season in 3, but most of his career in 4, that's one possibility.

Certainly he is listed as 3 in the 1934 Grand Final Budget with Arthur Link at 4. As I said, I'll check it out and get back to you.

I think that is a very real possibility. Mind you Ecky has railed long and hard over the errors in the "official" Glenelg records. So I think your budget would be correct. I merely passed the question given the historical names on each locker in our changerooms.

Tassie,

I spent the afternoon pouring through football budgets from 1933 to 1940 and I have no idea why Blue Johnston would be listed on locker No.4.

In every season, Johnston is listed as number 3 in the Football Budget, including each game in his 1934 Magarey Medal season.

I will add that I didn't have time to check seasons 1927 to 1932 in which he played, but it would appear No.3 should be the number Johnston is remembered for.

Ray McArthur won the 1939 Medal in No.2, amended above.

Sorry Spelly, I just spotted another error.

Andrew Jarman first wore No.2 when he came to Norwood in 1990, but when he won his second medal in 1997, he wore No.10.

Sorry I didn't spot this before, All the others appear to be correct.
