After the battle?

Postby whufc » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:33 pm

My mate has a theory that Norwood vs Port games are respected that highly by both clubs and are generally emotional / physical games that they struggle to come up the following week.

His reasoning is that after such a big game both clubs aren't as emotionally into the next weeks game as well as wearing some extra bruises and sore spots.

So my question is what are Port and Norwoods records the week after they play each other?
Maybe if we can get the results from the 1990's until present it will give us a fair idea considering both clubs have had ups and downs over that time and will give a true reflection no matter what their overall record is.

Since 1991:
Norwood
Won 35
Lost 21
Drawn 1

Port
Won 37
Lost 19

This excludes matches where either Port or Norwood play two games in a row against each other - say Rd 23, Qualifying Final; or last match either team plays for the season, then Round 1 against each other. It does include the first match of the following season so long as it is not another match between the two.

This is all time (since 1897)

Norwood:
Won 168
Lost 123
Drawn 6

Port:
Won 195
Lost 97
Drawn 1

Over the years I've watched foty, and Norwood v Port Adelaide clashes, Port Adelaide had a remarkable consistency over the years, not losing many games at all, so I can imagine their % of winning games the week after a Norwood match would still be pretty good.

Likewise Norwood, who had a lot of up and down minor rounds but seemed to find form when playing Port Adelaide. There were many times when Norwood's from leading up to a Port Adelaide game would be poor, and Port's would be good, but then we would see Norwood come out and win.

I can't speak for Port Adelaide, but for some reason, Norwood do appear to play that little bit better against Port Adelaide for some reason. The remarkable aspect of these classes would be the number of times the favourite gets beaten.
