Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Reserves, Seconds, etc...

Postby Leaping Lindner » Fri Apr 11, 2008 11:02 am

Further to a discussion on another thread. The following is from NAFC annual reports.
So it seems that between 1908 and 1912 the "reserves" competition changed it named from The Adelaide and Suburban Association (which had been around since the 1880s - at least) to the "seconds".

From the 1908 Annual Report
North Adelaide Seconds.
Your Committee have pleasure in reporting that your second
team greatly improved during the season, and, although only in
their second year, secured a place in the Finals of the Adelaide
and Suburban Association.
It is quite probable that with the
experience gained they will attain a higher position during next
season. Your Committee tenders its thanks to the officers, and
especially Mr. C. Young, the energetic Secretary, and the trainers,
the efforts of all of whom are deserving of commendation.

From the 1912 Annual Report
Juniors
Your Committee tenders its hearty congratulations to your
Second Eighteen on winning the Premiership of the South
Australian Football Association
. They displayed fine form
throughout the season and members deserve credit for their
consistency. Much praise is due to their coach, Mr. C. Tuckey,
for this efficiency. Praise is also due to the Hon. Secretary, Mr.
C. F. Young, and to members of the General Committee and
training Staff for their energies.

Possibly the first recorded one I have seen is Roy LeMessurier from 1906 whilst playing with Semaphore Central. Roy ended up playing league at North after that side of the LeMessurier family "saw the light" and moved from Semaphore to Walkerville

I've researched the scores from the "B" Grade as it was known at the time between 1912 and 1915, and only have the following scores missing:

5/7/1913 Sturt 61 Torrens 41, played at Unley
4/7/1914 Norwood 42 Sturt 51, played at Norwood
1/8/1914 Torrens 40 Sturt 20, played at Norwood
5/6/1915 Port L Torrens W, played at Alberton

And for reasons I don't know South and Sturt from a ladder at the end of the season only had 11 matches down, and I can't find their second meeting for the season. The ladders often didn't add up, so those points are as close to the score as possible.

The Sporting Mail (which was for a few years was separate to its' parent Sunday Mail), was inducted in 1912 and gave excellent coverage to the B Grade in 1912. Hence no missing scores and only 14 matches that did not have complete quarter scores (with the help of the Register and Advertiser).

Anyway, the finals scores were:
31/8/1912 1SF Port 4.10 Sturt 10.12 Norwood
31/8/1912 2SF North 9.11 Norwood 3.6
7/9/1912 F North 7.8 Sturt 3.5 Unley - the Sporting Mail hinted that North were "compelled" by the Association to play at Unley.
14/9/1912 CF Port 4.10 North 10.13 Norwood

16/8/1913 1SF Port 4.13 Torrens 9.9 Norwood
16/8/1913 2SF Sturt 7.9 Norwood 4.10 Unley
23/8/1913 F Sturt 8.4 Torrens 2.3 Adelaide
30/8/1913 CF Port 5.8 Sturt 4.17

8/8/1914 1SF South 9.16 Sturt 5.5 Norwood
8/8/1914 2SF Port 3.7 Torrens 3.13 Unley
15/8/1914 F South 7.7 Torrens 5.5 Alberton

11/9/1915 1SF Port 6.8 West 3.8 Norwood
11/9/1915 2SF Torrens 9.15 North 1.9 Unley
18/9/1915 F Torrens 5.8 Port 3.8 Unley

I also know that Port were the Premiers in 1911.

Year: 1906

"The Norwood second eighteen won the premiership of the S.A.F.A. It was its first season in the competition".
