i remember going, i think they invited wwt to play the game because there was 15 teams in the vfl whoops aflat that stage & needed a team to even it out.........if only they could have done a north adelaide & made the semis or whatever it was they made many years ago & wouldn't the afl have been very embarrassed about the outcome

You are exactly right, it was because there were 15 AFL teams.
In 1986 North beat Melbourne at Footy Park and then a full strength Collingwood by 8 points at Waverley to make the semi finals before being absolutely thrashed by Hawthorn in the semis.

I don't think Collingwood were full strength...
