I remember seeing this guy in the River Murray League in the mid 90's, he'd have to be in the top 3 country footballers i've ever seen. I half expected him to be named in Port's inaugural AFL squad in 96, would certainly have been as worthy as Donald Dickie and a few other guys!!

Given the timing of this good season, I'm sure the Power would have had a look at someone like him, given that he'd only just turned 22 at the time.
Don't know what happened at Sturt, perhaps he fell out with Carman?
Played for a few years in River Murray as you stated GWW, then back to coach Nairne and still playing for Meadows now.

I think the basis for selection was the number of times they were selected in the Advertiser Team of the Year. Added to that, Robran's versatility allows for a more balanced team. I couldn't imagine the team would look as good if Fitzgerald, Ebert or Kerley were named on a HF flank.

Kerley?? Was this guy actually any good as a footballer? I guess most of the people posting on this site probably wouldn't have see him play, given that he retired 40 or so years ago. I've always just had the belief he was tough and uncompromising and an inspirational coach, but never had the perception that he was a champion footballer (although i'm sure if you asked him personally he'd say otherwise!!).

I never saw him play but I'll bet London to a brick that Robran was a better ruck-rover.
I can understand AH's arguement for balance but Robran is wasted on a half-forward flank.

Yes, i can remember clearly Jimmy May's time with RMFL club Murray Bridge Redlegs (now out of existence), i think it was 94/95. Redlegs appointed Kym Bartlett as coach, and they recruited about 7 or 8 really high quality Hills players. They basically dominated the minor rounds of both years, but were unable to win a flag. They made the GF in 95 against the side i followed, Tailem Bend. Redlegs were leading early, and May must have had about 14 touches in a quarter and a bit, he was then "run through" by a Tailem defender and concussed, which turned the course of the match. I think Muffy Kartinyeri (ex Sturt/South), still playing at Tailem this year, won the medal for BOG that day.

I believe that May had a serious injury a year or two ago, so surely must be playing on one leg these days, if he was 100% he'd be a superstar in the Hills country League.

As good as he is though, probably wasted his time in country leagues, should have been a 200 game SANFL player.

The same is often said of Jack Cahill, Fos Williams and Jack Oatey.

Their achievements in the coaches box tends to overshadow their playing careers.

But they were all great players in their own right.

I do know of his reputation for being a good footballer, but i have always had the feeling that he was tough, and somehow his "legend" was larger than the reality. Cahill had great skills i'm aware of that, and have recently learnt that Oatey is highly regarded by Norwood as a player. And Williams as well was an inspirational footballer, in addition to his coaching exploits. I've always just had the feeling that the "Mr Football" persona elevated Kerley's football playing career above what it actually was....so was wondering what the reality actually was.
