Interesting one with James May.
A highly rated junior who left the club for a few years to come back and "kill the pig" for the Blues in '96, yet spent most of '97 in the twos and was not to be seen at SANFL level again.

GWW wrote:Kerley?? Was this guy actually any good as a footballer? I guess most of the people posting on this site probably wouldn't have see him play, given that he retired 40 or so years ago. I've always just had the belief he was tough and uncompromising and an inspirational coach, but never had the perception that he was a champion footballer (although i'm sure if you asked him personally he'd say otherwise!!).

Given the timing of this good season, I'm sure the Power would have had a look at someone like him, given that he'd only just turned 22 at the time.
Don't know what happened at Sturt, perhaps he fell out with Carman?
Played for a few years in River Murray as you stated GWW, then back to coach Nairne and still playing for Meadows now.

The same is often said of Jack Cahill, Fos Williams and Jack Oatey.
Their achievements in the coaches box tends to overshadow their playing careers.
But they were all great players in their own right.
