Probably the most underrated footballer in SANFL history imo. Copped shit from opponents. Copped shit from his own supporters. So he wasnt a hard arse, big deal. What he was, was a very athletic, consistent, big game CHF who structurally was as important as any other Port player of that era.

Despite my being a staunch Norwood supporter during that period I respected him as an effective player who did it without being a thug.

There weren't really any more thugs at Port, Psyber, in Smith's era, than there were in any of the other leading SANFL clubs of that time (mid 80's to early 90's).

If you look at Port's grand finals from 88 to 90, they were considerably less spiteful than 85 to 87.

The Great Man would change a game around if Port was behind.
