1980's SANFL

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

LOL, base on that logic, we need to rewrite history nearly every year.

Suggesting a team that lost the 1st semi was better than a team that played in the GF is laughable ... finals records are based on actual results, not ifs and buts or maybes.

Based on that logic, the Bays were the best side last year when clearly they were 3rd best as the finals results showed.

I can make all the excuses under the sun for a 2 point loss in a 2nd-semi and a 5 point loss in a prelim but the facts are that the Bays were not good enough when it counted. That's the way the system works.

If it is your opinion that Norwood were a better side than Port in '72 then so be it and you are entitled to believe that ... but the facts clearly say otherwise.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

More crap. If a supporter from another club defends their team because they disagree with you it's being hypersensitive. If it comes from a Port fan it's called 'Loyalty'.

Rick E Boy, you can count on two things in this forum:

1. Ignorance
2. People just stiring the pot to get a rise of someone.

We've just witnessed a combination of both. I especially loved the comment that by finals in 1972, Norwood had run their race. In the final 5 minor round matches, Norwood won 4 and drew 1 ... but, we shouldn't allow facts to get in the way of a bullshit story, eh?

1983 Escort Cup Grand Final ad from Channel 10 - mentioning South playing "Torrens", but showing footage of South v Sturt:

Probably not a mistake by Channel 10, CK. Where would they get any South v Torrens footage from? They wouldn't have had any of their own, and in the unlikely event of Channel 7 having some (as these two would rarely have featured in the "Match of the Day"), the perennially cash-strapped Ten would've been unwilling to pay for it. Far better to use some of their own vision of the South-Sturt semi-final.

1980 Grand Final between Port and Norwood, first 5 or so minutes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6GOaEgQ ... re=related

One of Port's greatest sides ever, but Norwood were a more than worthy opponent.

Anyone know who the other commentator (with Ian Aitken and Ian Day) is?

Thanks CP, I certainly wouldn't have picked it as being Marker.

I'm presuming 1980 was the last year that ch 9 did the replays for a while, did 7 and their BIG REPLAY take over in 1981?

It would be interesting to know a rough breakdown as to which stations did SANFL footy in which eras.

I was hoping the full game would be on youtube somewhere, as I haven't seen it for years.

IIRC there would have been quite a few similarities to the 1999 GF:

- Legs out early in the first with the breeze
- Port control the 2nd and 3rd terms
- Legs rally and throw out a challenge in the 4th
- Port settle and take the choccies
- Norwood arrived via the Elim Final
- Port were minor prems and smoking hot favourites and had wiped the floor with mostly everyone throughout the year

Probably the most dominant Port side of all time. Or close to it.

Not meaning to detract from the Port discussion but the first 5 minutes of the "Way it was 1981" are here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6obMe7xA8yQ

Notable things to me:
- headline story of 1981 apparently was that the SANFL approached the VFL to enter a composite team called the Adelaide Football Club in the VFL in 1982 :o (if I had heard that before I had forgotten)
- North in the red guernsey in the last year before the stripes IIRC
- Neil Balme playing for Norwood
- Kym Dillon playing for Torrens
- West in the first year of the red sash guernsey after the stripes when the sash didn't go down the back of the guernsey. Looks odd - I read somewhere it was a mistake by the manufactuer
- A Rendell marking for Torrens but I am not sure if it was Matt or Tim

That was the first year I closely followed SANFL and for some reason I memorised every Port player's number at the time and can still recall most of them to this day

I claimed to barrack for Port at the time although I was just going with the popular vote at school at the time

2 losses and 1 draw. 1 of the losses was by 4 points. Cant recall the other off the top of my head. Average winning margin was 68 or 69 points. Evans kicked the record goals at the time. Ebert won his 4th Magarey. First team ever to kick over 3000 points. Percentage of 65% from memory.
