Adelaide Hawk wrote:I first showed an interest in footy when I discovered a stack of discarded football budgets in our shed as a result of my brother's scout group paper drive. I recall reading through the lists of names, already knowing some like Neil Kerley. I remember being amused by the name Costello because I already knew Abbott & Costello.

Then I began collectng Mobill Footy Cards and Coca Cola bottle tops. I watched the replay of the 1964 GF on TV, so I made dad promise to take me to some footy the following year.

Earliest memories of matches were wins over Sturt & Port Adelaide, and both those side played in the GF that year. My favourites were Bill Wedding, Ian Brewer, and Ron Kneebone.

Perhaps one of the funniest memories were against West Torrens at Norwood Oval. Ron Kneebone stooped to pick up the ball. As he did, a young and skinny Peter Phillipou ran in to bump him. Ron saw him soming so he braced himself to ride the bump. Phillipou bounced off Kneebone, hit the ground hard and was taken from the ground. It was like trying to knock over a brick wall.

Coca Cola bottle tops I had forgotten about them I had heaps of them .Not sure what happened to em.
Peter Phillipou I remember him coming home from Canberra .And he must have learned a lot from that bump Adelaide hawk .One of my favourite memories is of Peter running through a Norwood player at footy park .the Norwood player was one of the Gallahgers we used to call him "manos" from a chicken ad at the time

Remeber my dad's best mate was a Sturt fan so my dad decided he was going barrack for Sturt too and painted, by hand I might add  , our Ford Consul two tone blue. I pestered him into taking me to the footy so he took me to Elizabeth. Centrals were playing North, I think it was around 1967. He switched to Centrals and I fell in love with North. He re-painted the car in red, white and blue  Just can't imagine anyone hand painting their car these days.

Footy on the telly on Saturday night on Channel 7.

Does anyone remember the footy badges that used to be in the Cheese Twisties packets. The oval ones used to have the club name and badge on them and the round ones used to have the club nickname and badge on them.

Sitting in the back garden with the tranny on listeneing to North v Carlton and crying like a baby after the final whistle.

I am older than Columbo , but I was there when muir jumped the fence .
So my childhood memories
I was there when 19 men were on the field against West in Freddie Bills last game.
I was there when Shotgun Miller kicked a goal to win a game
I was there when Rocky Roberts came back from Richmond .I didn't remember when he left.
Going to Football Park when there were no seats or shelter .Getting soaked with my mates and not being able to get out the rain.
I was there during the years that west torrens only won 1 or 2 games.mostly against Woodville and Centrals .

One of my earliest memories is going to footy park to watch one of my friends brothers playing for torrens. There were a heap of us kids and a few parents .I don't recall the guys first name but his last name was Alexander and he was a big lad .Can recall my Dad being mad because us kids sat in the boot with the boot open .It was a huge old yank tank how we made it there and back I have no idea .
I can recall going up the street to the shallows family(the brothers who played for torrens) house .Playing with the younger kids and the older Brothers being there along with Peter Cousins(I think it was peter.).
Ahh the 1970's
To bad the footy was awful
Funny apart from the footy park games in the rain most weeks the ovals were packed .In the days when Knuckles coached the Eagles the crowds were huge .

Mickyj his name is Bob Alexander he was number 48

Buying the Football times newspaper each Thursday.
Collecting as many Football budgets at the end of each game as possible.
Getting home to watch Bruce host the replay to see if I could spot me on the TV.
State games during the week at Football Park.
Escort Cup games, first at Thebby then Footy Park, mid-week aswell.
The top SANFL being invited to play in the VFL knock-out Fosters Cup.
Malcolm Blight's goal in the wet at Unley oval, 60m, p!ss!ng down with rain in the last qtr, it would've been like a medicine ball.
Woodville knocking off Port in a semi final, all the Port players formed an aisle for the Woodville players to leave the ground through.

My childhood memories of the SANFL?

Port-79/80/81/88/89/90/92 then I became old enough to drink so I guess that cant be counted as 'childhood'

Sitting in the back row of the old Alberton Grand stand smelling the linament come up through the floor while I could hear Jack going bananas.
Pasty with sauce and chips at half time.
I used to wear ( until I was about 6 ) my full Magpies kit, boots'n'all.Tough on a cold day,but add a duffel coat and all is well.
Playing Mini-league at Thebarton and running past Rudy Mandemaker, big red.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

KG's footy show was great so was 7's Big League Replay

There was also a footy show on Sunday mornings and they showed the results of the games with garden gnomes and the loser would have its back to the camera. Think it was sponsored by Kallogs

Tweaking interest in the game in the mid-60s, I recall the media coverage of the game. On the Monday there would be a write-up of the games in the Advertiser, the News would have their votes for the game, etc. Then for the next few days there was very little, you'd see maybe a photo of someone at training, but that was about it.

Then came Friday when you opened the papers, saw the teams, who was in and out, etc. It was gold. Then you'd see a matrix of who the journalists thought would win.

All TV would do is have an hour replay on a Saturday night, and for memory there was a half hour panel on Channel 7 on Thurdsay nights to discuss the games.

So when you went to the footy, you were starved, and it was marvellous. The quality of the game didn't seem to matter, you were just happy to watch a game. I would get a budget, study the player numbers, and watch eagerly for the 1/4 x 1/4 score updates from other grounds.

I think that's what made it special to me. These days the saturation of footy in the media 24/7 , and the fact not all games are played on Saturday afternoon, I find gets a little tedious at times ... especially if the game is a little dull.

I think that show might have been hosted by Rick Keegan.

Collecting coca cola bottle tops.
Going with my uncle to Woodville training and getting autographs.
Mobil cards.
Watching a game from the outer at Alberton the day Alan White lost his spleen.
Listening to magarey medal count on radio.Or the footy show on a thursday night with Rossi blue star boots being advertised. They weighed a tonne and were very high cut.
Very young watching my father listen to Norwood NA Grand Final 1960 when Barry Potts kicked a bag. He later played for our country team and was as tough as nails. I began barracking for North on that day.
Anyone with bottle tops they would like to sell please PM me, especially the 1964 position set.

What do you mean "position set"? Do you mean because the caps included the position they played?

I used to have the full set .. God only knows where they are now. Still have the 1963 set though. :)

When the big four were : Port, West, North and Norwood

When South, Sturt and Glenelg shared the wooden spoon

and when West Torrens played before huge crowds and promised the world and either just missed out on the finals or lost their final

Did North and West have any great games over those years - big minor round games, 1 v 2, large crowds, finals? Just curious
