Re Jack Oatey - I agree. I grew up in the time when Jack was Sturt and Sturt was Jack. Its only in recent years that I really became aware of his contribution to NFC and indeed, he was captain/coach of NFC's team of the century as a playing rover. I have the print in front of my PC!

Macca got the edge over Aish because he played more games, was a Tomkins and Magarey medallist, premiership player and state player. He was Norwood thru and thru and his loyalty saw him knock back all overtures from VFL clubs. A quintessential club man. He is also arguably the hardest nut we have ever had and I think the opposition feared him and his playing ability whereas with Aish it was all about finesse, style and quality but he was, after all, a pretty slight sort of a fella!

Hope you enjoyed the info about "Prestwood". Do you remember him at all?

I'm not familiar with Presty, what era was he prominent as a Legs cult figure? Was he his era's version of Super Sid?

Re Oatey, its interesting how he and Fos Williams both started at other clubs then created more of a legacy at a new club.

Would be quite difficult to calculate but would be interesting to see a "head to head" Oatey v Williams in games that they coached against each other in. You'd have to guess that it would be close to 50/50..

Come on GWW, everyone remembers and loves Brian Prestwood, the Legs fan who always ran onto Norwood Oval in his tracksuite when noone else was allowed to.
A great character of the SANFL.
RIP Brian.

Sorry

Spent most of my early years in the country. Up until about 5 years ago, i think i only ever went to one game at the Norwood oval which i think was in 1985.

Lived i in Adel for a year as an 8 year old and went to several games but most were at Footy Park.

No need to be sorry mate, I'll try and find a photo of him for you.
He barracked for North in the 87 GF so I'll try and find a pic from that game, he had a Tshirt with his own face on the front while waving a North flag, it was priceless.

Brian was a legend!

Would love to see a pic of him at the 87 GF Wedgie if you can post it.

GWW - he was a bit like Super Sid except that he was only ever behind the one club. And you're right, he certainly was a cult figure and Wedgie has summed him up beautifully!

BTW Wedgie, how did you like me description of Brian and his contribution as a wingman? I enjoyed writing it at least!

GWW - did Port ever have a character like Brian? have a vague recollection that Super Sid may have been a Port man at one stage - pre Norwood, woodville, etc!

Bugger, just quickly checked my 87 GF DVD and I've only put the game on it due to quality constraints so I'll have to convert it off VHS.
Got the day off tomorrow so I'll see what I can do.

BTW Wedgie, it would look great on the RLC Forum too if you do manage to get a chance to source it tomorrow.......

Love your sense of humour GWW and looking forward to hearing of a Port cult figure or maybe one from your time growing up in the country?

I cant really recall any such character following Port although there prob would have been. As i said in another post, i didnt see a great deal of footy throughout the 80's (due to living in regional areas), average prob 2 or 3 games a year, most of these games were at Footy Park and a reasonable amount at Alberton as well.

The first i remember of Super Sid was when he was supporting Norwood during Balme's coaching days, would have been mid to late 80's i'd say. I have a slight feeling SS might have been a Port Power supporter in the AFL, might have been his connection with Port you were thinking of. Not 100% sure though.
