Had played VFL for Fitzroy & St Kilda in late 70's early 80's.
Dont think he was recruited as a full back, played there majority of '83 and was sensational. But if memory serves me correctly, late in the year he played 2nd ruck behind Dirk DeJong after Mickan went down. Definitely played that role in GF as Tony Burgess played full back on Rick Davies.
Williams was extremely athletic and '83 by far was his best year.
Probably never realised his full potential, but gave Westies pretty good service over 7 or 8 years playing a variety of positions.
As to him playing State of Origin, I think if the Vics didnt want to pick him he was there for SA to pick.
Mark Dreher who also was recruited from Vic after playing with Collingwood was one of the best CHB's I have seen, although he really only had one good year in '83, but he was awesome. He also played State of Origin for SA in '84,.

That is all spot on. I think Williams only played 1 or 2 senior VFL games, and I think that was with St. Kilda. He was playing Reserves when we recruited him, and that was as a CHF.

Owen Martin went alright as well.

Thanks Nick. I had a brain fade and couldn't remember Owen Martin's name at the time (just remember that famous photo you attached) but was going to come back to it.
I have edited him back up the top now.

Other notables I recall playing full back for the Roosters were:
John Riley
Peter Anderson
Ian Kroehn
Kevin Barr

John Riley, albeit being too small for the position had some outstanding games at full back as a young player. That is where he made his name, He kept Stephen Copping kickless in a game at Glenelg in 1979 and beat Tim Evans at Prospect a few weeks later. He hardly played full back after that year.

I can never remember Peter Anderson playing full back for North. He was more a ruckman or forward although he did play back pocket in the 1971 premiership side.

Ian Kroehn was a shadow of his former self when he came to North. He never recovered from Jezza's 10 goal performance in the 1973 state game and by the time he got to North he had no confidence and never regained it. Interestingly he still supports North though.

Kevin Barr was a wonderful club man. He played 10 years at the club for just over 100 games. he would have played nearly as many reserves games. He was a very steady player who probably lacked a bit of dash, but he didn't do much wrong. He was 20th man in the 1972 Grand Final and came onto the ground with about a minute to play. His instructions from Mike Patterson were to make sure you get a kick, which of course being the consummate club man, he did.

Peter May was only ever a ruckman. He had one state game in 1967. Perhaps you are thinking of Number 22, John May, who played a number of games as a ruckman in 1969 and then played as a full back for a few games around 1972.

I reckon Roger Delaney is pretty underrated to be honest. Im only relatively young (29) but he is by far the best defender ive seen at SANFL level. Was equally important to Ports success as Hodges. Rarely beaten, the most consistent kick of a football ive seen play for the club and he was a big game player. In a current era of possession football, short kicks etc.....I feel that the art of weighting a kick so that a teammate doesnt have to break stride is something that has slowly been taken out of the game....and its something that Roger did better than anyone else ive seen at any level.

Delaney was very good, but to me, he was no more important than other members of the defence, especially Phillips, and to a slightly lesser extent Abernethy and Leslie (when he was there in 88). It was the backline as a whole i think that was the major factor in winning flags from 88 to 90. Forward line and midfield were very good also but i doubt we would have won those flags without Phillips, Delaney and Abernethy, and the others who played in the backline.

Add in Stephen Carter and Paul Northeast. Extremely reliable defenders during that period.

Yes agree, George was vital part of Port's success too, plus blokes like Northeast, Carter, G Boyd, Phelps etc.

I could be wrong with the first name.... #-o

I am leaning to Craig Balme...? ;)

Norwood.

Craig Balme v Tim Evans of Port. :D

He accidentally missed the ball and hit Evans in the back of the head every time.
Smile :)
