1982 Preliminary Final

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Really enjoying your posts, AH, JK, MP, ML. Learning lots.

Following Norwood in that time must have been pretty special, to win flags from the positions they were in in some of those seasons and finals.

How big were the slumps of Sturt and West that year? Were the Bays lucky to make the finals at all, or should have they got a double-chance?

That's a pretty fair question mate .. From a hazy memory the Bays were right up there with Port, Norwood and Sturt in expectation, but coming off a GF appearance in 81' I'd imagine most people would have picked them for a double chance spot.

Sturt's best back in the early 80's was always explosive and good enough to beat anyone, but they seemed to trip over a bit at crucial times.

Watching back over the Way It Was video's it was odd that there could be some big spankings in years like 82 and 84, yet any team on their day was capable of winning or troubling most other teams.

82' was a special year for me as a kid going to the footy with my old man, but there's no question I didn't grasp just how difficult Premierships were to achieve and how infrequently they would come around.

IIRC, West were sitting pretty at 12-4 before dropping five of their last six.

Sturt only won three of their last eight minor round games.

Not so sure about this one. The Woodpeckers won only one game for the year and were regurlarly getting 30 goals kicked against them and Torrens weren't much better. South and North would have their moments but never looked like finalists in 82 (well, maybe North were in the hunt a little). The big surprise was West missing the finals are looking a monty to make it.

OK, maybe not Woodville (although I reckon we only beat them by 1 point at Woodville some time between 82-84) .. But we lost to South in 82, 83 and 84 (they were finalists in 83 and 84 so a decent team) .. We also lost to Torrens in 83' and had to come from 7 goals down in the last quarter at Thebarton to get the choccies in 84.

In 84 North were ordinary, but smashed the all conquering Magpies and almost rolled the Tigers at the Bay.

David Graingers 1982 season didnt start well
Pre -season there was a tribunal hearing for the Grainger/Caldwell 1981 Grand Final incident
Im not sure if the SANFL or Glenelg raised the issue, but the tribunal sat on this matter just b4 the 1982 season commenced
Grainger copped a 6 week suspension
Glenelg had asked the tribunal to ban Grainger for 5 years !

This could also explain why Grainger got fired up for the 1982 Prelim Final

GL 2-3...10.6...11-9...13-12
PA 4-3....6-4...11-4...14-5

In 82 North started to look a half decent side even though they only finished seventh. They murdered Port at Footy Park and then beat the Bays at prospect coming from behind before just losing to Central at Adelaide in a game that ended their final aspirations. Peter Marker said at the time that the competition was very healthy if a side as good as North were only seventh.

In 84 North only won six games out of 22 yet had a percentage of over 50. They had a horrendous run with injuries and lost numerous close matches. As well as the one mentioned at the Bay, North also lost to Norwood by one point at the Parade late in the year when Norwood were steamrolling to their famous premiership. Thus is wasn't a complete surprise when North came out and won their first 11 matches in 1985.

Yeah you could definitely see North were building toward something .. I reckon that highlights my point that on any given day, all teams were capable of troubling the others.

Of North's 6 wins in 84, I reckon it included a big win over Port the minor premiers, and another big one over West the reigning premiers (A Dietrich day out) .. A loss to West which shouldn't have been a loss also.

Woodville aggregated total of 2047 points for
They averaged about 93 points per game

The one win was at Thebarton

iirc grave dangers first game for 82 was the gf replay anzac day which ended in a draw thanks to a joke of a holding the ball decision against chris duthy in the dying seconds, andy porplycia kicked a goal after the siren

The Anzac day game was round 4 and it was Chris McDermott who was called for holding the ball. Shocking decision right in front of me!!!!

Glenelg 12.9 (81)
Port Adel 11.15 (81)
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Was a disgraceful decision given by umpire Rick Charlesworth. Heard him interviewed on 5DN the week after and he justified his decision with words to the effect that "young players like McDermott get less leeway because they need to learn the rules of the game." Talk about clutching at straws.... why not just admit he made a mistake? Even Foster eventually did that....

That's not really surprising given who Port had out to the State game - Evans, Ebert, Bradley, Giles, Phillips, Hughes, Johnston, and Belton (plus Cunningham injured).
