That's a pretty fair question mate .. From a hazy memory the Bays were right up there with Port, Norwood and Sturt in expectation, but coming off a GF appearance in 81' I'd imagine most people would have picked them for a double chance spot.
Sturt's best back in the early 80's was always explosive and good enough to beat anyone, but they seemed to trip over a bit at crucial times.
Watching back over the Way It Was video's it was odd that there could be some big spankings in years like 82 and 84, yet any team on their day was capable of winning or troubling most other teams.
82' was a special year for me as a kid going to the footy with my old man, but there's no question I didn't grasp just how difficult Premierships were to achieve and how infrequently they would come around.

Not so sure about this one. The Woodpeckers won only one game for the year and were regurlarly getting 30 goals kicked against them and Torrens weren't much better. South and North would have their moments but never looked like finalists in 82 (well, maybe North were in the hunt a little). The big surprise was West missing the finals are looking a monty to make it.

OK, maybe not Woodville (although I reckon we only beat them by 1 point at Woodville some time between 82-84) .. But we lost to South in 82, 83 and 84 (they were finalists in 83 and 84 so a decent team) .. We also lost to Torrens in 83' and had to come from 7 goals down in the last quarter at Thebarton to get the choccies in 84.
In 84 North were ordinary, but smashed the all conquering Magpies and almost rolled the Tigers at the Bay.

Pre -season there was a tribunal hearing for the Grainger/Caldwell 1981 Grand Final incident
Im not sure if the SANFL or Glenelg raised the issue, but the tribunal sat on this matter just b4 the 1982 season commenced
Grainger copped a 6 week suspension
Glenelg had asked the tribunal to ban Grainger for 5 years !
This could also explain why Grainger got fired up for the 1982 Prelim Final
GL 2-3...10.6...11-9...13-12
PA 4-3....6-4...11-4...14-5

iirc grave dangers first game for 82 was the gf replay anzac day which ended in a draw thanks to a joke of a holding the ball decision against chris duthy in the dying seconds, andy porplycia kicked a goal after the siren

The Anzac day game was round 4 and it was Chris McDermott who was called for holding the ball. Shocking decision right in front of me!!!!
Glenelg 12.9 (81)
Port Adel 11.15 (81)

They murdered Port at Footy Park and then beat the Bays at prospect coming from behind before just losing to Central at Adelaide in a game that ended their final aspirations. Peter Marker said at the time that the competition was very healthy if a side as good as North were only seventh.
