Am struggling to find the full side on the net but it appeared WA had a pretty hand side.

Blight (C), M. Aish, G. Anderson, A. Antrobus, C. Bradley, P. Bubner, M. Campbell, R. Cousins, R. Helyar, A. Jarman, S. Kernahan, B. Lindsay, G. McInstosh, P. Motley, M. Naley, J. Platten, M. Redden, J. Schneebichler, K. Thomas, T. Warhurst, G. Whittlesea.

Some "fair" talent in that line up.
For the record Kernahan snagged 7 goalsand Blight 6 goals.

Can u tell me more about him??

I have two sisters that I am really good friends with (both stunners) who have the same last name, couldn't imagine it's an over popular name maybe a relation, ill have to ask them

Solidly built half bank flanker who ran in straight lines and didnt take a backward step (as with most backmen of the era) .. Think he spent a few seasons playing in Darwin too.

1985 was the last year that the SANFL enjoyed having most of its best players here rather than in the VFL. While some SA talent had gone like Williams, Phillips, Abernethy, Lokan, Taylor, Copping, Hodgeman, Rendell, Maylin and others we enjoyed having most still here including most of that exceptional group of young talent that formed the backbone of our successful SOO sides in the 80s and early 90s.

On the other hand the WAFL teams were well into their path of selling star players to stay afloat financially.

1986 saw the exodus of SANFL players really kick into gear as VFL teams got wind of the impending introduction of the VFL draft.

So the 1985 State side was kind of the end of an era. By far the best non SOO SA side from 1985 onwards.

Great memories.

Bradley, Kernahan, Platten, Motley, McGuinness to name a few (Burgess also went, I think?)

That was huge with so many clubs losing their best player at the same time.

Definitely a line was drawn in the sand...

Still doesn't devalue my '86 Sportlover's Glenelg premiership tee with caricatures and autographs.

Bought that beauty from Bondi markets about ten years ago.

And wear with pride to this very day.

To everyone's bemusement...

1985 State Game South Australia 30.18.198 d Western Australia 16.15.111

Contains the complete game. One of the best South Australian state sides ever assembled gave Western Australia a football lesson at Subiaco. Check out some of these names: Blight, Aish, Anderson, Antrobus, A. Jarman, Lindsay, McIntosh, Motley, Naley, Kernahan, Platten, Carey, McDermott. Amazing, especially when you consider this was not a state of origin match!

Goals - SA: Kernahan 7, Blight 6, Cousins4, Platten 3, Thomas, Bradley, McDermott 2, Campbell, Redden, Naley, McIntosh. WA: Sidebtoom, Waterson, Bairstow 3, Mitchell 2, Wrenstead, Richardson, Cousins, Scott, Browning.

Best - SA: Kernahan, Bradley, Platten, Motley, Blight, McIntosh, Bubner, Whittlesea. WA: Mitchell, Langsford, Waterson, Bairstow.

Crowd: 25,881 at Subiaco Oval..

I'm still kicking myself I didn't grab a couple of Glenelg 1990 and 1992 Premiers T-shirts when I had the chance 18 years ago from a back storeroom at the club!!

On a similar note...

I did see one bloke selling/giving away Glenelg premiership posters after the 1990 grand final.

Remember it clear as day coz I was laughing my arse off and everybody was bagging out the poor SOB (who probably barracked for South.)

Not sure how they got out. - must've been a massive cock-up.

But I wished I bought/took one...

Also, 84-86 saw the great players of the previous era retire, eg Cornes, Blight, Ebert, Davies. 10 years ago these were the players taking over from the retiring greats such as Bagshaw, Cahill etc, but in the 80's weren't replaced due to the VFL exodus.

Also, is the Helyar in Norwood's squad at the moment the son of Rohan?
