I have a feeling this might be Roger Coudraye who was a PE Teacher at my high school in the 1980's (Murray Bridge High).

Re Stemper who was captain, does anyone know what year he moved to Norwood? Presumably he played in a few grand finals at the Redlegs, may have played in a flag or 2 (82, 84)?

Roger Coudraye was a normal size player, his brother John was the beanpole ruckman. Roger had his jaw broken in an incident against Port Adelaide, he came back nine games later against Port and his jaw was rebroken. Legend has it that a normal meek and mild Port Adelaide player fronted his teammate culprit and had to be held back from belting the teammate who certainly wasn't meek and mild.

Roger retired after the second break.

This was actually the first half decent side Woodville had. The next year they made the finals.

Frank Stemper played for Norwood in the 1982 Grand Final but didn't play in 1984. It is interesting to hear him talk of his time at Norwood compared to Woodville. He is adamant that he was a much better player at Woodvillle, injuries had caught up with him by the time he went to Norwood, yet he played state footy as a Norwood player. I guess it just suggests that it is easier to be recognised in a good side.

The 1982 Grand Final was Frank Stemper's final game. He began with Norwood in 1980 and played 63 very high quality games, including 2 Grand Finals, 1980 & 82. It's hard to imagine he played much better at Woodville, maybe it was because he played a key defensive role at Woodville whereas he was more an attacking half back flanker at Norwood. I think Frank is under-rating his footy at Norwood, he was brilliant.

Its been a long pre-season so far lads !
We have now listed all the players who played in 1978
We have had some good discussions and good insights from various posters
B4 I start on the season proper there was one more snippet

01/04/2011
On the day of the opening round there was some bad bad news for PA barrackers
Max James can you believe it, was cleared to South Melbourne
Max 's career was startling, when he also played 1 game in 1984

QUESTION
Max was a star
Great mark
How did his career evolve in the VFL ?

Its incredible how many players became unavailable or injured for ST this season

This is REALLY testing the memory but IIRC Edwardstown played Flinders Park in the SAFA Grand Final that year. I remember the Sturt cheer squad were out in force for Edwardstown. I just can't for the life of me remember who won

Flinders Park played Athelstone in the first SAFA GF in 1978. They knocked off Edwardstown in the Prelim from memory. For the record Flinders Park won a wet and miserable day at Adelaide Oval
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Definitely played against the Bays at Richmond as he was best on ground, won Westies the game and finished any chance the Bays had of making the finals. Mr Footypunt was not a happy chappy when interviewed at the end of the game when the interviewer asked him about De Jong. Why the interviewer mentioned an opposition player to a losing coach I have no idea.

That's right, I recall it now. That was his first game back and at the first bounce he ran in and thumped the ball 20 yards into attack, and the fans loved it.
