QUESTION
D KNUCKEY played 2 games for a total of 12 at the end of 1961
Is he related to the great SA man Charles Knuckey ?

I don't know if Don Knuckey was related to the great Charles Knuckey but Don Knuckey was a very good footballer whose career was cut short by a serious knee injury. Don Knucukey was a dashing back pocket player. He was pacy and fitted the North long kicking pattern. He played in the 1963 Grand Final and was one of the four North players in the 1965 Mobil series of footy cards. I think he hurt his knee in that year and he disappeared from the scene. The last I knew he was living in South Africa. He visited the club in the mid 90s with his good friend Barrie Barbary.

I also note that Geoff Paull played a game in 1961, after playing a couple of games in 1960. Geoff was a fringe wingman rover at this time and it was only when Don Knuckey got injured that Geoff took over in the back pocket where he remained until he retired after the 1972 Champions of Australia match, having played in two premierships. The question that will never be answered is whether Geoff Paull would have had such an illustrious career if Don Knuckey hadn't been injured?

*Ploenges - related to Warren who played for South in the 80s/90s?
*Christie - "Nipper" Christie, the radio commentator? Any relation to Gary who played at South and Glenelg?
*Kupsch - perhaps a relation of David, ex North Adelaide player
*Roenfeldt - whenever I see the ex South Adelaide player's name, I wonder whether he was relarted to the ex channel 9 televison personality from the 1980's.
*Neave - related to ex Nowood and Eagles player Simon?

Brian Ploenges, premiership wingman is Warren Ploenges father.
Graham Chrisite, premiership ruck rover and former South captain was Gary Christie's father. As far as I know he was no relation to David "Nipper" Christie of Woodville and the media. I think Nipper christie was a cousin of the Obst family.
Can't help with the rest.

There was also a Livesey (Steven I think) and Foote (David?) playing more recently, would they be related to their namesakes in the 60s? Was there also a Pill playing in the 80s as well?

3 Sides WA/VI/SA finished on 3 wins each
And the carnival is over
Might a better format have been to have a top 2 in a play off ?
This was the 15th Carnival played since 1908
VI 13
SA 1
WA 1
This was the first time WA won the title
SA won the 2nd Carnival played in 1911

Article on the carnival
SA GAME IMPROVING
It seems certain, however, that SA football is improving
It was no fluke that SA had 8 players in the All Australian team
VI coach Len Smith went out of his way to say that SA's excellent chances of beating VI at 3/4 time in their Carnival match were blown away by an adverse wind change
And SA's 2 point defeat of the Carnival winner WA prompted WA coach Jack Sheedy to say, some months later, that SA was the 'best side' in the Championships

A rather interesting call by Len Smith about the wind change
VI won by 58 points [but was very close at 3/4 time]

FOOTNOTE
1960 Interstate game in Adelaide
SA 14-15
VI 3-12
This was the biggest win SA had over VI in all state games at the time [69 points]

The 1961 Brisbane Carnival game was the 100th game between SA V VI
VI 72
SA 26
DRAWS 2
These matches from 1879 -1961

I don't think it would be AH, although I'm not certain. I don't really know that part of the family that well, Charles unfortunately died in an accident in his milk truck in the early 70's, a couple of years before I was born.

He (Charles, known as "Chas") was a star country footballer, and I heard that he tried out with West Torrens, but I believe he only played Reserves, although again, I'm not actually sure how many (Reserves) games he played.

Brian Livesey was Steven Livesey's father. Brian Livesey (nicknamed Bronco) was another outstanding wingman who would have been a state team regular in another era. He may have had a state game or two.

David Foote's father is John Foote but I don't know if he is the same J Foote as named in your list.
