QUESTION
D KNUCKEY played 2 games for a total of 12 at the end of 1961
Is he related to the great SA man Charles Knuckey ?
I don't know if Don Knuckey was related to the great Charles Knuckey but Don Knuckey was a very good footballer whose career was cut short by a serious knee injury. Don Knucukey was a dashing back pocket player. He was pacy and fitted the North long kicking pattern. He played in the 1963 Grand Final and was one of the four North players in the 1965 Mobil series of footy cards. I think he hurt his knee in that year and he disappeared from the scene. The last I knew he was living in South Africa. He visited the club in the mid 90s with his good friend Barrie Barbary.
I also note that Geoff Paull played a game in 1961, after playing a couple of games in 1960. Geoff was a fringe wingman rover at this time and it was only when Don Knuckey got injured that Geoff took over in the back pocket where he remained until he retired after the 1972 Champions of Australia match, having played in two premierships. The question that will never be answered is whether Geoff Paull would have had such an illustrious career if Don Knuckey hadn't been injured?
