No, didn't play in the GF mate ... Was an ultra-exciting looking prospect, with height, pace and size about him at such a young age and he certainly knew where the goals were, was a great shame we didn't get to see more of him.

One of my favourite players was Matthew Kelly who I really think could have been an outstanding player at AFL level, but sadly broken leg after broken leg eventually forced him to give the game away in his early 20's.

TONY GILES

Career: 1975-1984
Games: 190 Port, 8 SA
Premierships: 1977, 1979, 1981.

Though his career was cut short at the age of 28 by a bung knee...

Leaping Lindner can confirm I'm sure

My recollection was that he was a good, honest player without being a shooting star

As for Budarick - didn't he go to the Sydney Swans for a year or 2? Again, my recollection is of a good, but not great, player. Tassie?

He came to North with bad knees (as did most ex-VFL players in those days) and kicked 15 goals  in his first three games with us in 1985 and then promptly did his knee again #-o
Played most of 1986 and was a very serviceable player but the knees just couldn't cope and he retired after the GF.

Hopefully Josh O'Donoghue wont be on this list in a couple of years time. Good exciting player we could do with at the Eagles.

David Armour. Came over as a mature recruit from Geelong (I think), played in the 78 flag and then was gone again within a year.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

He actually played 69 games from 1978 to 1980. Yes, he was a member of our 1978 premiership team. Prior to joining Norwood, he played 19 games for Geelong from 1974 to 1976, and then 18 games for East Perth in 1977. He was a member of the East Perth team that were defeated by Norwood in the 1977 Ardath Cup final.

Young lad played for the Bays in the early 90's, Jarrod Hocking maybe? Drafted by the Crows, saw him in one of their trials and thought he looked ok, and then I dont recall ever seeing him again?

Yeah i remember Hocking, there was another lad Michael Barton, although i'm not sure if he got reruited by the Crows, he seemed to disappear at a similar rate as Jarrod Hocking.

both played league footy 1991-1994.

Hocko was a league regular with Williams maily at full back - he weant to Subiaco at the end of 1994.

Barto was in and out of the 1s with Chocco, He went to Qld mid at the end of 1993 or beginning of 1994 - not sure followed a bird I think...

This is the period were Glenelg stated to suffer through coaching changes and started our downhill spiral to three consecutive spoons.

As the stars of the 80s retired or weant to the AFL the coaching changes meant the next tier of players couldn't get established due to changes in coaching opinions-

Good players who if they stayed and built up league experience would would not necessarily led to GF appearances but certainly would have avoided 4 flags in 5 years:

Players such as: Michael Barton, Jason McIntosh, Shane Gepp, Jarrod Hocking, Erik Martin, Scott McDonald, Brad Smith, Guy Ridgeway, Craig Budarick, Simon Angove, and Hamish Stuart to name but a few drifted off due to better employment opportunities and or lack of opportunities at league level.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Similar to Jason McIntosh who played a year in the RMFL in 1993 then finished up following his missus up to Qld the following year.

Troy Olsen. Baldest 19 year old ive ever seen. Spent two years at Port, played in a flag in 94, kicked 35 goals in 95, got drafted by Collingwood with a pick in the 100s but not sure he bothered to go over. Next time I saw him was in a curtain raiser at a Power game in 98 or so, and he'd put on about 30 kilos and was almost the size of an apartment block.

Remember him lining Macca up at Alberton one day, and you could hear the crack from the crowd ... Understandably the Port faithful loved it (umps didn't waste anytime reporting him), but he looked a little taken aback when Macca stayed on his feet and grinned and pointed at him whilst letting him know his turn was coming.

From what I saw of Olsen, I thought he could play too.

He certainly could play. A real old fashioned footballer. Probably wouldnt get beyond reserves level nowadays as he wasnt the fittest bloke going around.

Pretty sure he kicked 5 goals in a final in either 94 or 95.

My favourite Olsen moment...one of my favourite moments ever really....was in the Port v Eagles grand final replay early in 1995. Late in the last quarter, Eagles getting done pretty easily, Andrew 'Hollywood' Taylor missed a sitter from goal from about 20 out. Olsen about 20 metres behind him yelled something out at him...Taylor turned round, ran full steam at Olsen and cannoned into him with knees up and two forearms to the head whilst Olsen stood there laughing. Started an all in brawl. Pretty sure Taylor got 3 or 4 weeks for that. Taylor came off the ground and the crowd gave him more shit than ive ever seen a player get.

Anyone that could turn that bleach haired freak rabid has my vote as a legend
