THE BETTER CLUB WEST TORRENS OR GLENELG?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Postby GWW » Thu Jun 08, 2006 11:42 pm

As a neutral (port) supporter, i would say:

This debate is a no contest:

I've always had a (un)healthy dislike (also respect) for Glenelg, because of the rivalry they had with my club......their competiveness........the way they operated throughout my lifetime (particularly 80's), especially pre 1991. They've produced some of the best players the state has seen, and some great premierhips teams.

.....but as for West Torrens, as far as i'm concerned if i was a supporter of theirs from late 50's to 1990 i would have jumped off a bridge.....the biggest joke in SA footy of last 50 years (except sturt's wooden spoons from late 90's, but at least they won 5 in a row in 60's, as well as the 74 and 76 flags....and maybe South in mid to late 80's, but overall i'd say Torrens).

Incorporating Woodville or WWT into the argument is not relevant for me. I'm going solely on on field performances of the West Torrens Football Club. Given that we, as supporters are more personally affected by the performances of our team in our lifetime, i would have much rather been a Glenelg supporter then a Torrens supporter!!!!!

Generally, i dont like to give Glenelg much praise.....but with this debate, i just had to have my say. Sorry Eagles fans, but West Torrens were a joke.

Glenelg haven't produced anyone nearly as good as Lindsay Head or Bob Hank IMHO.

Using my points based system (as used in the Nwd/St/Nth thread)...
West Torrens 6 pts
Glenelg -6 points

That system is-
Flag: 3 pts
R/Up: 2 pts
Spoon: -2 pts

R/U shouldn't get anything and if it does get anything it certainly shouldn't get 66.6% of a premierships value, there's no difference between coming 2nd and 2nd to last in my eyes. You still fail.

Sorry, that should be 1 point for R/up (my totals are worked out on: 3, 1, -2)

Absurd system. A team can finish second bottom for 5 years and have no points. Another team makes 4 prelims and has one woodeny and is -2.

Glenelg were a joke before the 50's though. Their cupboards are filled with wooden spoons. Glenelg are a 25 year flash in the pan club and have done nothing else apart from 34. Apart from the 25 year flash in the pan they are down with South and Woodvill as the jokes of the SANFL.

And for some reason the average guy in a pub and ur average victoran media commentator rates Glenelg in the mix with North and Sturt sometimes above. In fact North if u asked most average blokes would rate below Sturt and Glenelg when in actual fact they are above them.

A system I have devised with a mate is 10 for a flag 7 for 2nd 5 for 3rd 3 for 4th and 1 for 5th.

the reason 2nd is 7 is because it allows a team finishing 1 and 3 to be higher than 2nd and 2nd which it should be.

Yep we're a joke until we play North in a GF......

yeah I know 87 but I think I might watch 86 again to night dasher and think of you....

Mate when we were admitted into the league we were a seaside resort/holiday destination the equivelent of Victor Harbour.

We basically came in to get rid of the bye, one year of B grade than straight into the real deal. Woodville and Centrals each had five years in B grade before they came into the comp as the League know from our experiences what would happen if they came in before they were ready....

It is no wonder we were so shite for the first 10 years as a lot of Plympton, Marion, Glengowrie, marion was all agricultural country.......

A lot of our area didn't start being urbanised until after the WW2 when soldiers reurned after the war a got low interest loans to build houses in Brighton, Warradale etc.

Hence come the 60-70s the babyboomers were young adults ready to play good footy hence we had so many good juniors coming through....

It is a little embarrasing being the only club that Glenelg could beat but in that 25 years the bays were very strong and I guess they were always gonna win some of them and it happened to be us. 86 was really the only 1 we were favs out of the 3 tho.

Watch and enjoy mate.

Yeah Ta, if it is any consolation we were only as good as our opposition allowed us to play...

So my system is absurd, yet yours is researched & intelligent? I hardly said mine was the result of painstaking research, so accept it for what it is.

Your system has an obvious flaw which I highlighted.
