1960's SANFL

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Not being around to see footy live in the 1960's, I thought I'd have a go (a guess!) at equating the stars of that era to players of recent times.

Lindsay Head.....Andrew Jarman

Paul Baghsaw....Darren Jarman

Ken Eustice.......Mark Ricciuto

Peter Darley......Shaun Rehn

John Halbert.....Peter Motley

Jeff Potter........Darel Hart

John Cahill.......Tony McGuinness

Bob Shearman...Michael Aish

Brenton Adcock..Scott Lee

Not sure about Don Lindner, maybe Burton (not saying Burton was as good) or Robran (at his peak I thought Chad Cornes may be a modern version of Robran, again not saying Chad in the same league as Robran).

The closest to Don Lindner was possibly Modra, Burton isn't a bad comparison either. The closest I could come up with for Robran was James Hird or in the SANFL Peter Motley. Neither of course were as good as Barrie but we willnever know how could Peter Motley could have been.

It is all subjective, but you have got pretty close with most of your comparisons. John Cahill was much more "in and under" than Tony McGuinness

I have read this on another illustrious footy website , posted by an illustrious poster
Nygaard was in Canada
he was spotting kicking a ball
He was asked to attend a practice session with a Canadian team
The person who spotted Nygaard became his agent
He tried out with the Green Bay Packers [either 74 or 75 depending where you read about this]
Damians average kick was 41 yards [39 yards is the minimum ]

From what I gather he had some trials, but didnt make the grade
B4 he went to Canada he spent time playing footy with West Perth in the early 70s

Nygaard, from memory , did not play at his best after suffering THAT broken jaw

Damien was in the roofing game; I had him come around for a quote some 15 years ago. Although my small job was inappropriate for his restoration business, he was most polite and professional and seemed a bit chuffed when I asked him if he was that bloke who used to play for Norwood.

I'm not sure if you all know but my last name is Kerley (hence the K in my member name). I'm related to Neil but i'm not related to the 70s Norwood player Stephen. Nor am I related to 4 time Geelong premiership player Gilliam Kerley from the 1880s or Collingwood/Coburg player Harry Kerley. :)

Anyway, i'm not sure if it was one of Damien's relatives but a number of years back my uncle started a new job and he met this person at his work, who was all friendly at first, until my uncle told him his last name. Apparently, this person was a relative of someone who played SANFL back in the 50s/60s and was belted by Neil.

Woodville also played Hawthorn in pre-season trial at Oval Avenue. The Jarman stand was under construction. Good crowd, Peter Hudson playing, Dennis Syversten full back. I met an old lady at a nursing home about ten years ago who convinced me that Dennis had given Huddo a 'bath'.

What year was that AH? I'm guessing Hawthorn rested several players in order for Woodville to get so close.

1969. Hawthorn was on the way up at that stage, they wouldn't have rested too many. Leigh Matthews and Peter Knights hadn't even played league football at that time.

AH what was the deal with Ross Dillon? Im guessing in those days the SANFL had a few ex-VFL or WAFL players that came across, that weren't "washed up" or incapable of making it in the league they came from?

Im told Dillon was a fair player at VFL level (as for eg, Hardeman was in later years) so what was it that brought him across to SA and a league viewed as inferior by the Victorians?

There wasn't the money around in those days to keep players in the game. You only need to read last week's Football Budget about how Len Fitzgerald ended up at Sturt as a classic example. A lot of quality VFL players ended up in SA in that era, Bob Shearman, Stephen Clifford, Tim Evans, Greg Parke, Colin Rice, Bob Keddie, Brian McGowan, Doug Long, etc.

Dillon was a state player for Victoria, I recall him kicking 4 goals against SA in the 1969 Carnival and thinking I'd love to have him at Norwood. I think he was plagued by injury at Melbourne in 1971 & 72, so he headed to Norwood in 1973.

For a long time SANFL Wingmen were nearly always short players , and usually with an abundance of leg speed
Towards the latter part of the 60s, in the VFL , there was a shift by some sides to play taller wingman that were 6 feet or over
Hawthorn and Richmond were 2 teams that played tall wingers ?

WA played 2 tall wingers in the mid to late 60s
Don Roach and David Bertelsmeier were both over 6 feet tall
Both played wing in the same teams in that era

Dave Boyd must have been a great player, made the PA greatest team 1870-2000
1948-1960 was his playing time
He played his last season in 1960 , so deserves a mention in this thread
His son Greg played for PA in the late 70s into the 80s
Greg was an interesting person to be with at some of the nightclubs back then

That car yard was it sold to Johnny Cahill by Dave Boyd ?
Also whats that 919 pounds for the Volksy or 1818 pounds with tax paid mean ?
919 pounds was quite a purchase, considering wages back then

Another son, Russell Boyd, was an exciting player for Port fans, but unfortunately we didn't see as much as we'd like due to injuries.

Greg also played district cricket at Woodville.

John Cahill had a Toyota dealership, Dave Boyd had a Nissan dealership in later years - so I'd say no.

Richmond had Dick Clay & Francis Bourke who were both able to play key positions later in their careers. The Hawks had Des Meagher who was a 6 footer, but SA went one further lining Barrie Robran up on him in 1967.

1960
Where do we start this season ?

BEST ?
Perhaps the best footballer at the start of 1960 playing in the SANFL was Lindsay Head [WT]
Often acknowledged by some as the 2nd best WT footballer after Bob Hank
Between 1945-1967 in 23 seasons Hank won 9 B/F Head won 8 B/F
Ive had the privilege to see Head in action, he was one of the flashiest skillfull footballers Ive seen in the SANFL
He mainly played Centre, or as in the 60s rested at half forward at times

COACH + CAREER
Head was the captain coach of WT in 1959/1960[and also in 1981 ]
He started off capt coaching at the age of 23, both times WT finished in 5th spot
1960 B/F was R MORRELL
1960 leading goalkicker M CLINGLY [51]
Head captained from 1959-1962, but not any year after that
Head captained the SA state team in 1960
Played 334 games, the first player in SANFL history to play 300 games

QUESTIONS
Head was approached to play by other SANFL clubs, and VFL clubs, anyone know which clubs ?

He was born in North Adelaide, could he have played for North ?
