Yes it is, and Ian Stasinowsky behind.

And Ken is wearing Blue Star boots. Gold.

Blue star boots. I remember (around 1972-3) my mum bringing home a pair of blue star boots she found in a bargin bin for $2. I laughed but thought maybe I could wear them for training. Turned out to be the best pair of footy boots I ever wore and I used them in all my matches.

Can you imagine buying a pair of boots for $2 these days? :)

You'd have to adjust for inflation; I can't see anyone buying boots for $2. E-bay maybe. ;)
That would be $17 nowadays.

What about the yellow 'star' footballers boots worn by a player in the 1975 SANFL Grand Final

No doubt.

However, there is one other bloke who never gets a mention, probably because he coached in a time when coaches might not have carried the gravitas of the modern era.

Most are aware that Shine Hosking was a brilliant footballer - two Magarey Medals are testament to that.

Few would probably be aware of his outstanding record as a coach.

Over fourteen seasons as coach at Port, West and Torrens his teams won four premierships (1921, 1933, 1936, 1937), were runners-up six times (1912, 1922, 1929, 1930, 1938, 1939) and only missed the finals once...

I remember 1978 for beingthe year I had a Bank of Adelaide poster where you put a sticker of each club on the corresponding game if they won. I ran out of Sturt stickers!

Was that the re-badged Cooperative Building Society that early?
I was fairly sure the original Bank of Adelaide disappeared into the ANZ in mid 1976.
[ I was negotiating a loan to buy a property in Melbourne St, North Adelaide, at the time and recall getting caught up in the transition.]

LOL .. I had one of those in either 79 or 80 and it was probably the thing most responsible for sparking my interest in the game .. Who would have thought something so cheap and gimmicky would be the catalyst for becoming a footy addict!!

Nah mate, it was definitely the Bank of Adelaide, ANZ took them over in 79 from memory.

Was it the Co-op that had the accounts where your interest rates were determined by he footy team you nominated you supported though?

Pretty sure.

Even though Port were premiers that year and won by some big margins...

I got sweet FA!

As I was saying a couple of days ago, I'd rank Kerley as #2 also factoring in that he achieved his success without coaching a session at the big four clubs of Port, Norwood, North and Sturt. And, thanks rig, I meant to say he turned Glenelg into 'a' power rather than 'the'.

This obviously leaves Jack Oatey at #1, not just for ten premierships at two different clubs (including three as playing-coach), but for his positive influence on the lives of the men and boys who played under him, and for his unsurpassed contribution to the development, particularly the skills, of the game in this state.

With only a little luck he could easily have had 12 flags at three different clubs (although I suspect his future may have panned out a little differently had he got West home in 1959.)

More recently, in the 90s you could always find Central players at McMahon's on a Satdee night.

Not sure, but I reakon there's a fair bet they went there back in the day when it was the Peter Jackson's...

You are right - I should have checked - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Adelaide
Thinking back, what I recalled was that because they were struggling in 1976 they were being tight with loans, the Melbourne St Branch Manager wanted to finance half through their finance company subsidiary at higher rates.
The same Branch Manager was still there when it became the ANZ, which was why I was confused.

JUNE 24 + JUNE 25
ROUND [13]

ST 16-12 NW 9-18
WT 25-20 NA 13-10
GL 15-24 PA 14-14
WV 21-12 WA 15-14
SA 15-21 CD 14-6

The top 4 met
ST beat NW who need to kick straighter to beat ST ...
GL beat PA
Prob meant that ST was a clear fav and GL was a strong 2nd pick at this stage
But as it is with the top 3 , either PA or NW had a chance to finish on even terms by finishing 3rd and playing against 2nd

SA V CD
4277 was the attendance, would have been 4226 if I was not born
I remember going to this very game SA V CD
It was the day Ron Hateley played an amazing game for SA
Hateley kicked 8 goals off the wing, and reported as a record for goals for a wingman, and I assume that would be in the SANFL
I was there with my SA mate, this game being on a Sunday
A lot of latitude was given to Hateley that day
We christianed Ron as "'The bone on his own "' from that day onwards
Hateley was a skinnish , tallish winger, just seemed to have a big motor, and had this ability to get the ball on his own

JUNE 26
CD back pocket Julian Swinstead had a knee operation, to remove a ligament

JUNE 28
SA ruckman Robert Doyle had an operation on his index finger

JUNE 30
The full bench of the Federal Court in Sydney ruled that Brian Adamson could play with NW for the remainder of the 1978 season
It was an interim decision enabling him to play until the High and Federal Courts hand down thier judgement on the matter

ADAMSON
At last Adamson was allowed to play football
It seemed propesterous that a player could miss just over half a season, with 2 footy clubs jostling thru the Courts
Was it at some stage in the SANFL that cut offs for clearances was 30/6 ?
When I saw Adamson play he looked more like Jimi Hendrix than a footballer
Adamson had a double celebration on this day, as it was his 26th birthday !!!

Who coached Port Adelaide to their 1928 flag? I have Shine Hosking listed, but you haven't included that season in your list.

4277-4226 .... did you take 50 friends with you? :D

I saw Hateley win a ball in a pack one day. He reached in and pulled the ball out with a rake. Seriously, I've never quite understood criticism of these types of players because the last thing you need is 20 players who are first to the ball. You need link players and receivers as well, and Hateley could rip you apart on his day.
