1978 The year it was

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

IIRC, Eckerman and Giles retired pretty young.

Reakon both were around 28?

Giles did his knee in the state game against the Vics at Footy Park in ' 84.

Eckermann's last game was the '83 reserves grand final win.

THey ended up fighting and as a result Giles missed the finals...

Broke his hand.

Season over!

FAV FOOD : STEAK, CHICKEN
FAV DRINK : TAB
FAV TV SHOW : MASH[another one]
LIKES : GOLF, SQUASH, CRICKET, TENNIS, ""I'LL TRY ANY SPORT""
DISLIKES:PRE-SEASON TRAINING, SUPportERS WHO PAT YOU ON THE BACK WHEN YOU WIN AND DONT WANT TO KNOW YOU WHEN YOU LOSE
BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON CAREER: MY FATHER +JOHN NICHOLLS
BEST FOOTBALLER SEEN : RUSSELL EBERT, BARRIE ROBRAN, AND RIO
MOST DIFFICULT OPPONENT: BRUCE WINTER
BIGGEST THRILL IN FOOTY: 1977 G/F
BIGGEST DISSAPPOINTMENT: LOSING 1977 G/F
AMBITION : TO ESTABLISH MYSELF IN THE LEAGUE TEAM IN ONE POSITION

On this game PA V GL
"" We are happy to go into this match as the underdog""
"' That will suit us and I think Kyms [Hodgeman] medal might just give us the needle we needed.""
"" We all want to win for Kym.""
"" Its not often a club wins the medal and a premiership in the same year but that what we are trying for""
FARQUHAR has had an unsettlling season , he has played several diff positions and has been hampered by fitness and form problems
""I dont want to use that for an excuse for poor perFORMance. If your a League footballer you should be able to play where your put""
FARQUHAR played his first game in mid 1975, when he was a Brighton HS student
FARQUHAR went back to Kangaroo island in 1976 and played for Dudley Utd.
In the last half of the season GL flew him back to play under 19s
FARQUHAR shifted back to Adelaide in 1977
He played 1 under 19s game, 8 reserves games, and the league team as well

FARQUHAR
Im glad he graced a footy field
He was a sensational mark, his high leaping in those days was very Whelanesque
Just imagine if Kenny and Michael flew for the same mark !
When he worked at Glenelg Store he might have worked with Paul Weston
AND he might have worked with Kym Hodgeman, which might also explain why his player profile gave a glowing reference to Hodgey !

has been for about 30 years i reckon,

one funny thing i remember about farqs happened in 84, he played a reserves final the day before our 2nd semi against port and got on the turps that night, next morning mr footypunt rings him asks how he is, mike says fine and the coach tells him he is playing fullback as dennis russell? had pulled out, suffice to say farqs was in our best at prezzos - thats where the story unfolded

16/9/1978
GL V PA FIRST SEMI FINAL

Previous meetings 1978

12/8 ALBERTON
PA 4-6...10-9...14-13...16-15
GL 1-2...6-6......7-8......9-8

GL lead 2-1 in the season
PA would have been an overwhelming fav to win this encounter
No Hodgeman a blow to the Tigers

THE SEMI FINAL 1978
GL 3-5....5-11...10-13
PA 2-1...5-7......6-9

At 3/4 time it was all but over with GL leading by 28 points
GL were on track to win and upset the Mighty Magpies

Final scores
GL 11-13
PA 13-13

PA added 7-4 to 1-0 in an enormous last qtr to win this

I have noticed a remarkable stat
The losing teams in all 4 GL V PA games in 1978 had a 100% conversion of goals to points in the last quarters [not 1 point scored]

Coach John Cahill took his coaching record to
124 matches
89 wins
33 losses
2 draws

1977 premiers PA is now on a winning streak of 7 this season
ST + NW would have to have been wary of the Magpies

FIRST SEMI FINALS RECORDS AFTER THIS MATCH

NW ...20...6-13-1
WT...16...4-11-1
ST....13...7-6
NA ...11...7-3-1
WA...11...6-4-1
PA.....8....6-2
GL .....8...5-3
SA......5...2-3

PA + NA have good records in these finals
NA have lost 2 of those finals by 1 + 6 points
WT have 3 wins below 6 points as well
CD had a 100% record

PA will meet the loser of the ST V NW 2nd Semi Final played the next day

Final score in the Anzac Day game was

25/4 Anzac Day FOOTY PK
GL 1-4...4-9...10-10...18-14
PA 3-4...4-5...5-6........7-6
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Very brutal game that one. Steve Kernahan was carried off on a strecther before 1/2 time but reappeared in the second half. Played a blinder in the second half. The Bays held Port to 1 goal in the first half from memory. Fights all over the ground. One of the Stingers early games for the Bays and they made their intentions known to several Port players that they would not be pushovers. Remember standing on centre wing on the outerside with my mates. Highlights of the game are on "The way it was 83"

Round 19 13/8/83

Glenelg 23.20 (158)
Port 8.15 (63)

Yes
Correct
well spotted
The final GL score was 18-14, not the 10-14 I had posted [it was late at night 0 looks like 8  ]
After 1/4 time GL gave PA a shallacking

Heres a who am I QUIZ
PA player
Recruited from Rosewater Football Club
Under 17s 1972 best and fairest winner
Under 19s 1973 best and fairest winner
Best first year player 1974 in the league
Played game 100 against WT in the 1978 Elimination Final

The thing that surprised me about this PA footballer was that he was born in England in 1955
Thats the main reason Ive brought this player up as a quiz question

Who was this player ?

Correct answer GWW

Andy Porplyzia and Alex Hyrhorec made thier debuts in 1974 for Port Adelaide
They played thier first games in the same match
Both were also mates and attended the same school

PORPLYZIA
Porplyzia was a sensational player mainly a half forward flanker
Had a great kick and oozed of skills and was a fantastic player
He is related to the current Crows player Jason
Andy would have played 150+ games I would say

HRYHOREC
Hyrhorec played a handful of matches and was a mean rough and tough half back flanker
A typical PA type defender in those days
There were some sick and sorry opposition players in the seconds when Big Al played !
People involved with the WWT club would know him well, Alex was on the coaching staff in recent times, assisting Ron Fuller

Would have been interesting if Andy and Alex ever stood each other !

QUESTION
Which Porplyzia was the better footballer Andy Or Jason ?
They are very similar players, very good skills

I think overall Jason Porplyzia is a better player than Andy Porplycia was, but there is not much in it.

It is interesting to note that although they are some relation their names are spelt differently.

I reckon Andy played Junior Football at the Rosewater Football Club
That being the case he kept another Newcastle connection
Rosewater Footy club is in a street called Newcastle Street !

Andy isn't Jason's uncle. Andy never had any brothers. I believe that Andy and Jason's dad are cousins, so does that make Andy and Jason first cousins once removed?

STURT V NORWOOD 2ND SEMI FINAL
SEPT 17

Previous encounters in 1978

NORWOOD OVAL
NW...2-2...4-8...7-13...7-21 [63]
ST...4-5...7-9...12-10..14-13[97]

UNLEY OVAL
ST...2-9...5-9...11-11...16-12[108]
NW...3-2...5-8...5-13.....9-18 [72]

Both games won by ST
Ironically both teams had 55 scoring shots each in total for both games
NW 16-39 in both games , would need to convert better to have a hope against the Blues
The last game at Unley was interesting
ST scored 14-3 to NW 6-16 after qtr time !

2ND SEMI FINAL
ST...4-8....7-14....12-16...13-19[97]
NW...3-1...7-2.......8-4......11-9 ]75]

ST defeated NW for the 3rd time in 1978, at 3 different venues
ST now goes into its 9th Grand Final in 14 years
The 1 millionth spectator passed thru the gates to watch this match[was it me ?]
Interesting last qtr ST 1-3 NW 3-5, I wonder if ST relaxed or NW Played better ?

IF anyone else has any more details in this 2nd semi final, feel free to post

The Preliminary Final was to become a NW V PA encounter
PA with 8 straight wins would have to start fav in this match

SEPTEMBER 18
The 10 SA club delegates voted at a league meeting not to join the VFLs inspired Australian Football Championships company
being formed to run a national comp in 1979
The decision ended weeks of speculation as to whether or not SA would join

SEPTEMBER 23
Preliminary Final
NW V PA

Previous encounters in 1978

FOOTBALL PARK
NW..2-3...8-5...10-8...11-9 [75]
PA..1-3....1-4....4-9....8-12 [60]

NORWOOD
NW 1-5...9-11...15-13...19-17[131]
PA..3-1...5-3......7-6......9-8 [72]

ALBERTON
PA. 6-3...8-7...10-9...12-15 [87]
NW 2-3...3-7...5-9......6-10 [46]

The first game was rd 1, PA were the reigning premiers, NW won the first half comprehensively, PA mounted a comeback in the 2nd half
Game 2 was a clobbering, and the only time either club passed 100 points in thier 3 games
Game 3 was the last game of the minor round, PA prob needed a win against NW this season and got it, hard to know how hard both teams tried in this match, the bigger picture was finals the week after

PRELIM FINAL
1/4 time
NW 2-2
PA 6-2
PA from memory jumped out the blocks and had 4 goals to zip early on
I was watching with great consternation, I was definitely thinking a straight sets exit for the legs in 78
NW 8-7
PA 7-4
A great 2nd quarter by the legs, in a great final to watch, the 3rd time this season NW played a great 2nd qtr v PA
NW 11-10
PA 9-5
A 17 point buffer, I was nervous but confident the Legs would win this game
NW 16-12
PA 11-8
NW scored a 34 point win, and to meet ST in the 1978 Grand Final

It was the end of PA season
The 1977 premiers were 8-8 and them made a POWERful run of 6 minor round wins, and 2 finals

I did recall One incident from this final
I reckon Neil Craig floored Bomber Clifford with a bump , but not 100% sure

ST V NW GRAND FINAL 1978
Did NW play its Grand Final in beating its arch rival in the Preliminary Final ?
Can NW find a way to beat ST after 3 losses to ST ?
I for one had thought the g/f would be a comfortable win for the Double Blues

My memory of that game is early in the last quarter, Port attacking and David Armour outmarked David Granger a couple of times in one on one contests. Those marks ended the contest. Tough player, David Armour.

GRANGER
David Granger had a reputation as being a hardman
However in all the games I saw NW play PA , David played fairly

ARMOUR
David Armour played in 26 games in 1978
There were 22 minor round games + 3 finals NW played
I assume the other game was a night comp match
David also kicked 25 goals for the season, I had thought he was always a half back flanker

MOST GAMES PLAYED IN 1978 PER CLUB[includes night comp games ]

CD 22 VIVIAN, MAKSIMOVIC, RAE
GL 28 COPPING.... 27 CAREY, HERCOCK
NA 22 BARUZZI, RILEY
NW 25 JENKINS,TAYLOR, VONBERTOUCH, ARMOUR
PA 26 PHILLIPS...25 CUNNINGHAM, EBERT, EVANS,KINNEAR
SA 26 BAYNES, BUTLER, HATELEY
ST 23 BARTON, CASEY, DAVIES, KLOMP,SIMS, WISEMAN
WT 23 DABROWSKI,HAMILL,MCSPORRAN, WHITE
WA 23 DONALDSON, KENNEDY,LOVEDAY
WV 22 HUTTON, SEWER, TYRELL

A lot of GL players played a lot of footy in 1978, was this a reason for thier mid season and onwards slump ?
