Hi all

I recently received the following email from John Devaney of Full Points Footy. John has a comprehensive website at http://www.fullpointsfooty.net which many of you are probably familiar with. John asks as follows:

"I’m currently finalising the text of a book, The Encyclopedia Of Australian Football Clubs, for publication early next year, and am anxious to ensure that the statistical information I include is accurate and thorough. To that end, I wonder whether you happen to have a record of the Christian names of following Norwood players of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: W.Duffy, E.Pollock, C.Woods, R.Townsend.

I’ve also attached a low-res version of an image I intend to include in the book. No doubt you’re familiar with it, as it’s appeared in a number of publications. I’ve seen it described as having been taken after the 1948 grand final, but I presume from the fact that there are Port Adelaide players clearly visible in the background, it was actually 1946? (The State Library, who supplied the photo, have it listed as 1946.)

The focus of the photo is obviously Jack Oatey, but I’d like to be able to name at least some of the other players in the shot. Can you help? If not, do you know of anyone who might be able to?

Anyway, I hope none of this will be too much trouble. Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

John Devaney
"

Can anyone help John out please, as I'm stumped!

It's obviously 1946 as he says with Port Adelaide in the background.
At a guess I'd say the guy whose shoulders Jack Oatey is on is Dougie Olds - but that's a guess (well calculated guess - he appears to be short and have light hair)

You would have the list with this Squawk - but for those who don't know, it's Charles W.G Woods, and Richard J.B Townsend.

With that photo of the 1948 Premiership Team:

Yes, the guy carrying Jack Oatey does appear to be Doug Olds. I thought his legs were a little too thick for Olds, but it does look like his face.

Educated guessing that the player on the left with the leg bandage would be Tom Warhurst.

The next guy with the long sleeved jumper rolled up over his elbows would be John Bell.

And I'm guessing the player on the far right is Brian Burke (judging by the short sleeve guernsey almost over the shoulder.

I'm still working on the two either side of Oatey, possibilities are Keith LePage, Neville Way, Graham Farrow and Ivan Holliday. Couldn't imagine who else it would be.

I'll keep looking and get back to you if I come up with anything.

I think the second player from the right is probably Eric Matthews, judging from the hair style and build.
