1975 season

Postby Interceptor » Thu May 29, 2008 12:41 am

In 1975 Norwood won the flag and I believe also won 16 games in a row during the season.

Can someone provide me with the premiership table at the end of the minor round?
I'd also like to see the results of each finals game played (with crowd figures if possible).

1975 ... easily my most memorable SANFL football season. Ross Dillon was brilliant week in, week out, and I was genuinely surprised when he didn't win the Magarey Medal that season ... not because of who DID win, but because he finished 2 votes behind the leader (Woite), and I expected him to poll at least 10 more votes than he did.

Thanks very much for that spelly.

The main reason I was asking was that I can remember Graham Cornes (who never has much positive to say about Norwood) having a whinge about how Glenelg were the ones who really deserved to win the flag that year.

Well Norwood finished top after the 16 wins in a row, but were obviously beaten by Glenelg in the 2nd Semi.
Norwood recovered to win the premiership, but I imagine Cornes and Co were bitter about missing a big opportunity.
Thoughts AH?

Oh and didn't Sturt have an absolute shocker in the 1st Semi

The scoring spree of that season by Glenelg overshadows the fact that Norwood were the minor premiers. And Norwood during that run of 16 wins beat Glenelg at Glenelg:

Round 10 1975
Norwood 6.3 10.10 16.17 20.24 (144)
Glenelg 8.0 13.7 14.12 19.13 (127)
Glenelg, 12,299

It was also the only loss that Glenelg had at Glenelg during the year.

One of those two wins was by 88 points against Central at Elizabeth, and the other was in the following round against West at Thebarton. A game that is etched in SANFL folklore.

I think that was the year Ross Dillon finished the Grand Final with stitches over one eye, and Norwood had Keith Le Page use hypnosis to help the Norwood guys remember to concentrate on the football in the final, and not be suckered into the fights Glenelg used to start as part of their routine approach to getting the opposition's mind off the game, throughout the year - was that when Neil Kerley was coaching Glenelg?

That premiership table encapsulates the notion of The Big Four - Norwood, Glenelg, Sturt and Port.

The Elimination Final would have been frustrating to watch - 19.52 in total. Port managed 11, 9 and 9 in the last three quarters - behinds!

The EF scorers was thus:

P.A: T.Evans 4.5, Cunningham 2.1, Cahill 1.8, Porplycia 1.6, Ebert, Kinnear 1.1, J. Evans 1.0, Granger 0.3, Burton 0.2, Natt, Light, Marrett 0.1, Rushed 0.2.
N.A: Anderson 2.5, R.Robran 2.1, Crouch, Hill 1.2, Sandland, Roach 1.1, B.Stringer, McInnes 0.2, Tuckey 0.1, Rushed 0.3.

Regarding the big four, there is no doubt in my mind that it would have been coined sometime in either 1975 or 1976. Prior to 1973 the finals did not consist of all four teams in the same year. Only when it was extended to a final five in 1973 did all four teams compete in the finals in the same season. Then between 1974 and 1976 these teams occupied the top four spots.

After 1976, all four teams competed in the same finals series in the following years: 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1988, 1999.

From all my old scrapbooks, we were good every single week for five months after somehow dropping the first two and having a hiccup in the second semi. but it was an epic year of football. Glenelg kicked a power of goals that year and enjoyed the little ground at home and played it perfectly. Also, back then, from my memories as a kid, when opposition sides got a run-on, no-one did anything other than try and belt blokes, so you just kept kicking goals. There was an unbelievable divide between the first three and the bottom couple. Still love watching that '75 video, mainly because of the reactions of guys on both teams. Norwood who hadn't won one for 25 years and the Glenelg guys who had lost a couple, and could sense their time was soon passing.

In the Tigers of Old DVD Cornes' comments on the 75 GF are not bitter more of disappointment that they didn't produce on the day when they were at their peak. One premiership from four GFs 73-77 (should have been five if it wasn't for Des Foster in the 76 prelim  ) is a pretty poor result. So it is not bitterness towards Norwood it is disappointment towards themselves - the players noone else certainly not Kerley even though he blames himself for a poor coaching move - He put Wayne Phillis into the ruck to get us going which freed up Ross Dillon IIRC.

Happy to be corrected.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Didn't the 'Big Four' term really get kicked along by Daryl Hicks, when he went to Centrals, and kept saying how he wanted to smash the big four control of the finals. To be honest, I always took it mean the numbers of Grand Finals and premierships claimed by the four clubs from the mid 60s through to early 80s. After West and South won flags in the early 60s, you only had North win a couple in the early 70s, and play in another to break the monotony if you didn't barrack for Glenelg, Sturt, Norwood or Port. Those four clubs kept on appearing on the last day pretty much every year, bar the one appearance from South in 79, until Westies saluted in 83.
