Premiership players

Hey, Spellman or anyone else with the info. Just wondering if anyone had records of how many premiership players there are, and how many have won multiple premierships as players. IE, how many players have won 1 flag, how many have won 2, etc. And if possible (depending on numbers probably) naming the guys who are up the pointy end of the list? Just curious who has the most playing SANFL flags and how many have managed a swag of them.

You're in luck. I know Spelly has a file he has placed on this forum previously. I'm sure he'll be happy to do it again. I have the list here but only in hardcopy.

I can tell you Geoff Motley (Port) still holds the record for the most with 9. (1954,55,56,57,58,59,62,63,65 from memory)

Spelly - Am I correct in thinking that Richard Hill and Phil Heinrich from sturt's 76 win both played their 1st game in that GF, AND that neither got onto the ground? Any others like that?

I'm not sure there, Adelaide Hawk would probably have that answer regarding if it was their first match or not. I don't think there has been a player who has played in a premiership side on debut, the closest I know of is Paul Stewart (2nd game) in 2006.

Heinrich debuted in 75 so not him. Also I remember talking about Richard Hill with a Sturt mate a few years back and it wasn't his 1st game it was his 6th or 7th IIRC. Also - again IIRC - he didn't play for Sturt again after that GF. Went to the country or something similiar.

So from looking at Spelly's list Geoff Motley has played in the most premierships with 9 for Port from 1954-1965. Obviously you need to play in a side that dominates an era so there are plenty from Port with 6+ premierships from a couple of different eras, some from Sturt in the 60's/70's and the Gowans and Slade from Central with 6 from the current era.

I realise that in most of the years South didn't play in a Grand Final but I make John Reedman a member of 8 premiership sides.
South -1892, 1893, 1895, 1896, 1898
North - 1900,1902,1905
He was also Captain of all those sides (except North 1900 where he was Vice Captain).
Also Topsy Waldron (Norwood) would have been a member of 9 premiership sides if I'm not mistaken (1878-83; 1887-89).

And at his age, to have embraced the internet is a wonderful thing - well done Topsy!

According to my records, the 1976 GF would have been Heinrich's 18th match, and Richard Hill's 2nd game.

Speaking of Sturt players named Hill, what about ruckman Malcolm Hill who played in Hawthorn's 1st ever 1961 premiership team. He began with Sturt in 1963 and played 33 games before retiring to manage the Berri Hotel in the Riverland at the end of 1964.

From 1965 to 1969 (except for 1967), Jack Oatey kept bringing him back from Berri to play finals. In 8 games, he played 4 Grand Finals for 3 Premierships. That would have to be a record I would think.

Richard Hill played in a premiership side without having had a kick in league football. In fact he was a premiership player without having ventured on to the ground during play. As 20th man, in the Preliminary and Grand Finals he wasn't called upon during the game. He did actuall play some games after 1976.

AH - you'll be glad to know that Malcolm is still alive and kicking, and writing many letters to the editors of local newspapers ;)

Bloody hell...

If Sturt in 2002 and WWT in 2006 DIDN'T interrupt the Dogs run of Premierships AND if we managed to win the flag again this year, James Gowans, Chris Gowans and Matty Slade could have joined Motley with 9 Premiership medallions...

Still though, 6 is pretty bloody good and would be somewhat of a rareity in future decades you would think...

Those 3 boys have been and will always be club legends, even if they didn't win all those flags, but it is nicer that they did !!??

GO U DOGGIES...

To use your logic of missed opportunities, if West Torrens hadn't beat Port in 1953, and South Adelaide hadn't done it in 1964, Motley would have played in 11 premierships.
