Picked up this interesting history piece about the Willunga footy club off the net. Considering the massive amount of growth of housing in their area, maybe they should return to the SANFL and eliminate the bye!
"Recognised by the SA National Football League as the second oldest football club in the state - with Port Adelaide Magpies being the only club older - Willunga has been a force in the GSFL since joining the competition in 1986.
Before 1986, Willunga was a foundation member of the Southern Football Association (now known as the Southern Football League). Although the club was formed in 1874 and joined the South Australian Football Association when it was formed in 1877, the SFA wasn't formed until 1886. Before that, the club played organised competition against sides from McLaren Vale, Aldinga and Sellicks Hill as well as other matches against Adelaide and visiting country teams.
Whilst in the SFL, the club won 22 A Grade Premierships. Since joining the GSFL, the club has added a further three A Grade flags.
The club has also had great success in the Reserves, Senior Colts and Junior Colts. Last season the Reserves won their third flag in a row, while the Senior Colts won their second consecutive flag. The club also won the South Adelaide Football Club Award for the third time since its inception in 2000 for being the most successful club in the GSFL."
