Ken Cunningham on Radio?

I notice from PhilH post on the Woodville thread that Ken Cunningham used to be on 5DN with David Hookes circa 1984.

Just wondering if anyone has any information on the radio career of Ken Cunningham? When did he start commentating on SANFL footy? Which radio station gave him his start and which stations has he been on since then?

I'm pretty sure it was Andrew Pearce he was at DN with.

I think KG started at DN in around 77.

Him and Hookes started at AA, i would say, early 90's.

I think what you are quoting was that banner incident, which happened in 1990.

IIRC KG and Pearce where on 5DN and Ian Aitkin and Hookesy were on 5AA in 1990. Then in late 1990 5DN stopped braodcasting on 972 AM band and went over to FM and became a music station X 102.3....

I don't know if Aitkin got shafted or what but KG and Hookesy started to do the sports show on 5AA in between race calls in 1991...

KG commenced on 5DN in 1977. He had been a Channel 9 commentator/host prior to '77.

He was breakfast show host on the shortlived 102FM, after 5DN got an FM license. He then moved on to 5AA, replacing Ian Aitkin and joining David Hooked and them Graham Cornes.

Cheers,

Pearcey

Nope, way earlier than that, I did work experience with them in 1990 and I won a clock radio in a footy quiz they held at the market in 1988. I remember because my brother was still a baby..

I have a vague memory that he went almost straight to radio from umpiring. At the time I was glad he'd made the change because as an umpire he always seemed pro-Westies, then pro-Port in that order...

KG retired from umpiring at the end of the 1967 season and certainly didn't go straight into umpiring. He played Sheffield cricket up to the 1973-74 season. He was a panelist on Channel 9s Sunday morning footy show and went into the pub business with Noel Teasdale. I know he was part-owner of the Carrington Hotel. He didn't start in radio until well after he gave up umpiring.

Obviously, my memory had condensed a few years then. I was a bit out of touch with the SANFL, for various reasons, between 1968 and 1975.

That's a pity. As a Norwood supporter they were 8 seasons which were the most exciting for me. To see us rise from wooden spooners in 1968 to premiers in 1975 was great :)

Yes I saw the 1975 victory and I have the match on tape somewhere in storage.

HI, my first post after reading for a few weeks.

Seeing this tv guide add brings back so many pleasant memories of footy shows long past. Really miss the banter and the coverage of all games.

The standard of the SANFL has improved immensly over the last few years and I wonder if a show like this may emerge again. If all SANFL devotees can drag some more friends and family to games it could just happen down the track.

I wonder, who would be the host and on the panel?

Long live the SANFL.

PS from what I have read BIG PHIL gets a birth on my panel!!! Cheers.

Did anyone hear KG and Cornesy last night talking about Sonny Bill Williams? Cornesy baited KG that even he would break a contract for $1 million and KG said he wouldn't. He then claimed that in the 80s when at DN, he was offered $5 million to break contract and sign to AA for 3 years which he turned down at the time!

$5 Million in the mid 80s to swap radio stations in little ol' Adelaide???? When the average salary was lucky to be $20 000

Besides Grybas and Martin, I wouldn't walk across the road to see, hear nor spit on any of em. Sad state of affairs if that's our "best sports presenter".

to say that ian aitkin got shafted would be an understatement, as soon as kg became available, he was given the flick within 24hrs, havent heard of him since
